BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS.-A SERIES of READING-BOOKS designed to facilitate the acquisition of the Power of Reading by very young Children.

The special feature of these books is that, even from the most elementary grade, they possess the interest which a connected narrative, however simple in wording, seldom fails to excite; and by this means make the readinglesson a pleasure instead of a dull piece of routine, and actually encourage the pupils to prolong it, or to practise the newly-acquired faculty at home.

The first volume consists of words mostly of one syllable; the second is rather more difficult; and the others may be taken up in the following order. The eight volumes are issued in strong cloth binding of a distinct colour for each, with cut edges, price 6d. each.

'Perhaps the most thoroughly practical little book on its subject we have ever seen. Its explanations, its paraphrases, its questions, and the mass of information contained in its appendices, are not merely invaluable in themselves, but they are the information actually wanted for the purpose of the teaching contemplated. We do not wonder at its being in its third edition.'-Literary Churchman.

AN ETYMOLOGICAL GLOSSARY of English Words derived from the Greek. Fcap. 8vo. 3s. 6d.

This volume contains nearly 2500 words derived from the Greek, most of which are in common use, while others are gradually being adopted into the English language. The derivations are given in Greek characters, and an explanatory Introduction is prefixed, which will enable those who have only a slight knowledge of the language, or are entirely ignorant of it, to understand the derivations, and to apply the principles to other words of a similar nature.

It is thought that it will be found useful to teachers, and to all readers of current literature.

OLD ROME: A Handbook of the Ruins of the Ancient City and the Campagna, for the use of Travellers. By Robert Burn, M.A. With Illustrations, Maps, and Plans. Demy 8vo. 10s. 6d.

It is scarcely just, however, to call it an epitome, for the author appears to have rewritten much of the old matter, and has also introduced some fresh information. "Old Rome," which is amply illustrated, contains everything likely to be of immediate service to the traveller; but the handbook, useful though it be, does not in any degree lessen the importance of the larger work. The one is for the portmanteau, the other deserves a place in every well-selected library.'-Pall Mall Gazette.
