SADLER (M. F.) JUSTIFICATION OF LIFE. Its Nature, Antecedents, and Results. Written with especial reference to Plymouth Brethrenism and Revivalism. By the Rev. M. F. Sadler, Rector of Honiton, Prebendary of Wells. Fcap. 8vo. 45.

'On the one hand it demolishes the Antinomian Solifidianism of certain Revivalists, on the other he shows that St. Paul's writings must be taken as the standard of doctrine on this point, and not displaced to adopt solely those of St. James, who has only treated the subject in a corrective and complementary view.'-Literary Churchman, January 26, 1878.

'Mr. Sadler follows his customary plan of direct appeal to the Holy Scriptures in an orderly and methodical sequence, avoiding all theological technicality (although evidently himself acquainted with scientific theology), and speaking as a plain man to plain men. It is this element of sturdy English soberness and common sense which has procured his books so much esteem, and which is just as evident in the present valuable and richly suggestive volume as in its predecessors. It will be a signally useful work to those persons who are in danger of being led astray by the reckless statements on Justification which constitute the central point of the Revivalist preachers of the American type.'-English Churchman, May 16, 1878.

We have now to thank him (Mr. Sadler) for a valuable treatise upon a corruption of the doctrine of grace, which, if not new, has lately received a new and most mischievous impulse in this country The reader will find in it a thorough and complete exposition of the whole subject, combining theological accuracy with much plainness of speech.'-Church Times, April 18, 1878.

EMMANUEL; or, the Incarnation of the Son of God the Foundation of Immutable Truth. Revised and cheaper edition. Fcap. 8vo. 5s.

The main idea of the book is shown by the title-page. It is to place the great doctrine there spoken of [the Incarnation] in its true place, as regards the structure of Scripture, and the theology of Christianity: to show that to whatever extent we admit the authority of Scripture, it is impossible to see in it anything greater and clearer than this, and that this great truth being admitted, the answer to a number of other important questions follows upon it, which have been discussed incompletely and unfruitfully by being discussed without due reference to the central truth on which they must depend. All this is well and powerfully done.'-Guardian, January 16, 1867.

The work of Mr. Sadler on Emmanuel, which is an admirable exhibition, in terse and clear style, of the central doctrine of the Bible, and dogma of the Church as it respects the Person and offices and work of the Redeemer.'-London Quarterly Review, July, 1873.

SADLER (M. F.) CHURCH DOCTRINE-BIBLE TRUTH. 24th thous. Feap. 8vo. 35. 6d.

This work contains a full discussion of the so called Damnatory Clauses of the Athanasian Creed. The new edition has additional Notes on Transubstantiation and Apostolical Succession.

'Mr. Sadler takes Church Doctrine, specifically so-called, subject by subject, and elaborately shows its specially marked Scripturalness. The objective nature of the faith, the Athanasian Creed, the Baptismal Services, the Holy Eucharist, Absolution and the Priesthood, Church Government and Confirmation, are some of the more prominent subjects treated. And Mr. Sadler handles each with a marked degree of sound sense, and with a thorough mastery of his subject.'—Guardian.

'We know of no recent work professing to cover the same ground in which the agree ment of our Church Services with the Scriptures is more amply vindicated.'-From an adverse review in the Christian Observer.

'Some writers have the gift of speaking the right word at the right time, and the Rev. M. F. Sadler is pre-eminently one of them. "Church Doctrine-Bible Truth," is full of wholesome truths fit for these times. . . . He has the power of putting his meaning in a forcible and intelligible way, which will, we trust, enable his valuable work to effect that which it is well calculated to effect, viz., to meet with an appropriate and crushing reply one of the most dangerous misbeliefs of the time.'-Guardian.

THE CHURCH TEACHER'S MANUAL of Christian Instruction. Being the Church Catechism expanded and explained in Question and Answer, for the use of Clergymen, Parents, and Teachers. 21st thousand. Feap. 8vo. 25. 6d.

'Far the best book of the kind we have ever seen. It is arranged in two portions; a longer and more thorough Catechism, and then, along with each section thereof, a shorter and more elementary set of questions on the same subject, suited for less advanced pupils.... Its thoroughness, its careful explanation of words, its citation and exposition of Scripture passages and their full meaning, in cases where that full meaning is so often explained away, make it a most valuable handbook.'-Literary Churchman.

It is impossible to overrate the service to religious instruction achieved by this compact and yet pregnant volume. . . We owe many boons to Mr. Sadler, whose sermons and theological lectures and treatises have wrought much good in matters of faith. This Catechetical Manual is second to none of such.'-English Churchman.

THE ONE OFFERING.

A treatise on the Sacrificial Nature of the

Eucharist. 6th thousand. Feap. 8vo. 2s. 6d.

'There cannot be a more grave and religious objection to the doctrine of an Eucharistic Sacrifice than the belief that it in some way militates against the completeness of the sublime satisfaction ouce for all made upon Mount Calvary. . . Mr. Sadler points out with force and discrimination how mistaken an accusation it is when it is brought against the teaching of the Fathers and of Anglican divines, or even against the more moderate school of Roman Catholics. Its quotations are most apt and pertinent.'- Church Quarterly Review,

THE SECOND ADAM AND THE NEW BIRTH; or, the Doctrine of Baptism as contained in Holy Scripture. 8th edition. Fcap. 8vo. 45. 6d. "The most striking peculiarity of this useful little work is that its author argues almost exclusively from the Bible. We commend it most earnestly to clergy and laity, as containing in a small compass, and at a trifling cost, a body of sound and Scriptural doctrine respecting the New Birth, which cannot be too widely circulated.'-Gvardiar.

THE LOST GOSPEL AND ITS CONTENTS, or the Author of Supernatural Religon' refuted by himself. Demy 8vo. 7s. 6d.

'The Lost Gospel' is not merely an answer to a work which seems already to have become forgotten, but has a more permanent interest, inasmuch as it is a defence of the authenticity of our present Gospels (especially of the Fourth) by a method not usually adopted; for instead of tracing the stream of citation downwards it traces it upwards, and shows that the universal acceptance of the Gospels at a given date (say A.D. 190 or 200) as the only authentic records of the life of Christ then read in the churches, necessitates their universal acceptance at least a century earlier. It also brings fresh considerations to bear on the subjects of miracles, demoniacal possession, and competency of the earliest witnesses.

Mr. Sadler seems to us particularly successful in exposing the hasty and unsound reasoning which has been applied to the Fourth Gospel.'-The Academy.
