The Life of the Author by Aug. Skottowe;
A Critical Glossary,
COMPILED AFTER NARES, DRAKE, AYSCOUGH, HAZLITT,
WITH SHAKSPEARE'S PORTRAIT TAKEN FROM THE CHANDOS PICTURE.
PRINTED FOR ERNST
1 8 2 6.
The purchasers of our new edition of Shakspeare's Dramatic Works
in one volume, published last year to the general satisfaction of the numerous subscribers, have expressed much anxiety for this present additional part, which could not be finished at an earlier period, having been detained by some impediments but a short time beyond the term originally fixed.
The Glossary we had formerly the intention to afford, was calculated to fill about 16 to 24 pages only; it will be found now, that it has increased, for the real benefit of critics, to a scale six times as large, granting to the reader in its present form a most useful guide through the obscure mazes of Shakspeare's sublime and matchless beauties.
The Miscellaneous Poems which likewise follow in this volume, joined to the Plays, form the remainder of his writings, whereby this edition of his Works will be now entirely completed. Augustine Skottowe's description of the Poet's Life, to which is added Shakspeare's Portrait (taken from the famous Chandos picture) facing the title-page, may be considered a handsome attribute to the whole.
