CLIBRARY 232167 ASTOR, LENOX AND TILDEN FOUNDATIONS. 1901 BUTLER & TANNER, THE SELWOOD PRINTING WORKS, FROME, AND LONDON. PREFACE. THE first translation contained some inaccuracies which in this present one have been emended the design (after the manner of Bassanio) remaining the same-to offer to those unacquainted, or unfamiliar, with the Latin language the works of Horace in an English prose version. In furtherance of this end a Glossary of the proper names and places is given, and some explanations concurrently with the text. Half a dozen or so of notes are also appended, as explanatory of the grounds on which certain passages have been translated. |
