UNIVERSITY INTELLIGENGE.

March 9.-A Convocation was holden on Wednesday last, for the purpose of electing a Vinerian Scholar, in the room of Mr. Denison, of All 'Souls, recently elected to a Fellowship on that foundation. The candidates were-Mr. Smith, Michel Scholar of Queen's; and Mr. Trower, Scholar of Balliol-both first class men. At the close of the election, the numbers were:-For Mr. Smith, 134; for Mr. Trower, 59. The former gentleman was consequently declared to be the successful candidate, and was immediately admitted by the Vice-Chancellor.

In a Convocation holden on Wednesday, a petition to the House of Commons, praying for Church extension in England and Wales, was unanimously agreed to.

The examination of candidates for Johnson's Mathematical Scholarship ended yesterday, when the examiners awarded it to Mr. John Andrews Dale, of Balliol College,

The Professor of Anglo-Saxon has issued a notice that on Wednesday next, at two o'clock, he will read his Terminal Lecture in the Clarendon.

The vacant Scholarship on the foundation of Dr. Clark, at Worcester College, will be filled up on the 8th of May next. Candidates must be born of English parents, in the provinces of Canterbury or York. A preference is given to the orphans of Clergymen of the Church of England. The necessary certificates and testimonials are to be presented personally to the Provost on or before the 4th of May,

March 23.-Mr. A. W. Haddan, B.A., Scholar of Trin. Col., has been elected Theological Scholar, and Mr. J. A. Dale, B.A., of Balliol Col., Mathematical Scholar, on the Johnson Foundation. Mr. Dale has also been elected to the University Mathematical Scholarship.

Mr. R. R. W. Lingen, Scholar of Trinity Coll., and one of Dean Ireland's Scholars, has been elected to the University Scholarship for the encouragement of Latin Literature. At the Examination for this Scholarship, Mr. E. K. Karslake, Student of Christ Church, so much distinguished himself as to be placed next in merit to the successful candidate.

On Tuesday last the following gentlemen were elected Scholars of Lincoln Coll. :-Messrs. N. T. Travers, of Trinity; M. Webster, of Balliol; M. Terry, of Queen's; F. J. Manning, of King's Coll., London; and Mr. R. Easum, of the Church of England Grammar School, Hackney.

CAMBRIDGE.

March 9.-We understand that a petition against the Dean and Chapter Bill, introduced by Lord John Russell, is in the course of preparation, and likely to receive the assent of a great majority of the Members of the Senate.

At a Congregation held yesterday, Mr. Almack, of St. John's College, was appointed an Examiner at the Previous Examinations of the present year. in the place of Mr. Lund.

Mr. Thomas Ford Tarver has been admitted a Scholar of King's College, in this University.

A grace passed the Senate, "to petition both Houses of Parliament against certain clauses in a Bill now under the consideration of the House of Commons, upon the subject of Ecclesiastical Duties and Revenues." The petition was carried in the Black Hood House by 35 to 7, and in the White Hood House by 33 to 3.

The Chancellor's Medallists.-The Chancellor's two gold medals for the best classical scholars among the commencing Bachelors of Arts of the present year were on Monday last adjudged A. S. Eddis and J. G. Maitland, both of Trinity Coll.

CAMBRIDGESHIRE.

On Wednesday, March 13th, a meeting was held of the Cambridge Auxiliary of the

Church Building Society, the Vice-Chancellor in the chair. From the report, it appeared that the parent society, during the

twenty years since its establishment, has assisted in providing Church sittings for 398,960 persons, of which number the free and unappropriated sittings for the use of the poor are 292,339.

DEVONSHIRE.

VISITATIONS.-The Venerable the Archdeacon of Exeter has fixed his Visitations as follow-Exeter, Tuesday, April 30; Honiton, Thursday, May 2; Collumpton, Friday, May 4.-The Rev. the Precentor has also fixed his Visitations as follow:-Colyton, Wednesday, May 1; Exmouth, Wednesday, May 8; Ashburton, Tuesday, May 14.

DURHAM.

Mrs. Lawrence, of Studley Park, has given £30, the Rev. Dr. Prosser, Prebendary of Durham, £20, and Charles Attwood, Esq., and Co., £10, towards the repairs and increase of accommodation of St. Mary's Church, Gateshead.

DARLINGTON.-A petition has been recently forwarded from this town, to the Hon. H. T. Liddell, for presentation to the House of Commons, against the plan of national education proposed by Lord John Russell.-A petition has also been sent from Darlington, praying for support and encouragement being given to the Church in Canada.

A subscription has been set on foot to purchase a collection of astronomical instruments to furnish a proposed observatory in the University of Durham, to which the Lord Bishop has contributed 100 guineas; the Rev. T. Gisborne, £50; the Warden, £30; the Mathematical Professor, £50; Earl Grey and Viscount Dungannon, £25 each; the Bishop of Chester, £20; and several noblemen and gentlemen various sums, amounting at present to £545 19s.

A petition from the Archdeacon and Clergy of the Archdeaconry of Durham, deprecating the plans of the Commissioners of Ecclesiastical Duties and Revenues, being carried into effect, has been signed by most of the parochial Clergy in this neighbourhood. The petitioners are anxious that the reports of the Commissioners should be referred to some competent Church authority for further consideration.-Berwick and Kelso Warder.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE.

The friends and parishioners of the Rev. Francis Close, Incumbent of Cheltenham, have presented that gentleman with the sum of £2,235 12s., raised towards the purchase of a suitable residence, as a testimony of "their respect and esteem for him as a faithful and most zealous minister of the Gospel."

HAMPSHIRE.

The parochial Clergy of the Diocese of Winchester, have petitioned against any increase of their livings being effected by the sacrifice or invasion of Prebendal Stalls, or other Cathedral emoluments. What will the

assailants of the "grasping" Clergy say to this new instance of that sordid feeling which they impute so liberally to the Ministers of the Establishment?

MIDDLESEX.

ST. BRIDE'S. The Common Council, on the petition of the Rev. Mr. Dale, the Vicar, the churchwardens, and others, have voted £300 in aid of the debt incurred by the erection of the new church in this parish.

SPLENDID COLLECTION.-The large sum of £206 was collected on Sunday, March 10th, at the Church of the united parishes of St. Vedart Foster and St. Michael-le-Querne, Cheapside, after a sermon by the Lord Bishop of London, in behalf of the Metropolis Churches Fund.

On Monday, March 18th, a meeting_was held at the Schoolhouse, Marylebone, Lord Kenyon in the chair, for the purpose of petitioning Parliament against the Ministerial plan of National Education. Lord Teignmouth described the proposed plan of education as one which the friends of the Church must look at with great apprehension. It was based upon a system that could only have for its object the undermining of the Established Church. Any system which removed the education of the people from under the control of the Clergy, was one fraught with great mischief. The noble lord read several extracts from the correspondence to show that, though Lord John Russell endeavoured to conceal what his real opinions were, as to the establishment of normal schools, for the education of schoolmasters of all persuasions, still the Marquis of Lansdowne's letter candidly avowed the object. He concluded by proposing a resolution declaratory that no system of education could be approved of, where the Scriptures, Liturgy, and Catechism were not taught in the schools. Lord Radstock proposed a resolution, declaring that the religious education of the children of the poor could not be safely confided to any but the Clergy. These, and several other resolutions of less impor tance, were unanimously carried.

On Tuesday, March 19th, a special general meeting of the friends and supporters of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge was held, to prepare a petition to both houses of parliament, praying that increased facilities of obtaining Christian Knowledge, upon the system of the Church of England, might be extended to our Colonies. His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury in the chair.

A subscription has been entered into on the part of the principal, professors, masters, and students of King's College, London, for the purpose of erecting a testimonial in the college chapel, commemorative of their sincere regard for the late head of the institution, the Rev. Hugh James Rose, B.D.; of their
