*Son of James Rand, vicar of Norton, by his wife, Margery, dau. of Edward Banckes, Rector of Long Newton; buried 24 Mch., 1645/6, at Redmarshall where he was also Rector. See pedigree of Rand, Surtees, Durham, iii, 417.

"Born at Rouen in Normandy, 1607, educated at the University of Rotterdam and at Leydon. In 1631 he became chaplain to Bishop Morton who presented him to the living at Egglescliffe, 1636. In 1640 the degree of D.D. was conferred upon him at Cambridge. In 1643 Bishop Morton collated him to the 7th stall at Durham, and in the following year he was appointed Archdeacon of Northumberland. Being Chaplain to Charles I. he was presented by him to the Rectory of Stanhope in 1646, he mar. Francis Corbett, and bur. 14 Oct., 1676, in the Cathedral Yard; he had issue:

Durham, by whom he had a son Ludovick, bapt. at Kirkmerrington, 27 Feb., 1620/1, who succeeded him, and two daughters, Catherine, wife of William Fenwick of Bywell, and Anne mar. to Robert Shafto of Benwell.
