1John Sleigh, son of Martin Sleigh, was baptized 8 March, 1595/6, and named after his grandfather, John Sleigh, mayor of Berwick in 1590. He married, 25 Sept., 1618, Cecily Fenwick by whom he had issue. He was mayor 1636, 1641, 1642, 1643, 1644, 1645 and 1655. He was buried 21 April, 1665, having made a death-bed will on the 17th of

that month.

2 Sir Ralph Selby, knight, brother and heir of Sir William Selby of Ightham Moat, Kent, and second son of Sir John Selby of Twizell, sometime M.P. for, and gentleman porter of, Berwick; knighted mayor, 1631; buried, 12 March, 1646/7. By his wife, Barbara, daughter of Robert Roddam of Roddam, he left, with other issue, Ralph Selby of Twizell. Cf. Raine, North Durham, p. 315.

Sir Robert Jackson, son of Robert Jackson, mayor of Berwick in 1576, he was admitted to the freedom of the borough by patrimony in 1595; knighted, 13 May, 1617; mayor, 1605, 1608, 1626, 1627, 1640; M.P. for Berwick, 1620, 1623, 1625, 1626 and 1628. He married, 30 Jany., 1609/10, Margaret White, by whom he had a daughter and heiress, Mary, successively wife of Sir Pelham Carey and of George Paylor of Nunmonkton. Sir Robert Jackson, who died seised of property at Fenham in Islandshire and at Holborn in Northumberland, was buried 29 Jany., 1645/6.

William Grigson should be Gregson, mayor 1632, of a local family still possessed of property in north Northumberland.

5 John Saltonstall, mayor 1637, buried 23 May, 1646. By his will dated 20 April, 1646, after mentioning his wife Jane, her son, George Milner, and her daughter, Ann Milner, he gave his lands in Lincolnshire, his messuages at Berwick, his tithes at Tuggle, Ancroft Mill and Allerdean to his daughters Elizabeth, wife of Patrick Ramsay, and Grace, then unmarried, but afterwards wife of Thomas Hughes, an officer in the army.

Gilbert Durie presented to the vicarage of Berwick in 1613; he was chaplain in ordinary of James I.; he subsequently deserted his benefice, and occurs in the guild book in 1645 as of Ellingham, clerk.' By his wife, Joyce Hilles, whom he married 19 May, 1607, he had a numerous issue. Cf. Scott, Berwick, pp. 354, 356, 364.

'William Harrison, appointed lecturer of Berwick in 1641, resigned that office, circa 1643. Cf. Scott, Berwick, p. 356.

Benjamin Clerke was removed from the mayoralty by Sir Arthur Heselrigg, 19 Sept., 1648. He again served in 1660 and 1661. Cf. Scott, Berwick, p. 210.

Thomas Temple married, 28 Feb., 1627/8, Isabel, daughter of Hugh Gregson, alderman of Berwick, by whom he had a numerous issue. Stephen Jackson, a kinsman of the above-named Sir Robert Jackson, described as alderman, 25 Sept., 1661, when he took a conveyance of Berwick Castle. (Cf. Hist of Berwick Club, vol. xix, p. 350). Mayor, 1653 and 1654. His will dated 23 Sept., 1669, was proved the same year. His son, Stephen Jackson, mayor 1690 and 1691, made his will 15 Dec., 1705. lbid..

12 William Rosden, son of Simon Rosden by Margaret Swinburn his wife, was baptized 16 March, 1589/90. In 1629 he took a lease of the rectory from the Dean and Chapter of Durham for 21 years at the rent of £10 p.a., of course paying a fine. In 1640 he took a conveyance from William Moor; and in the following year took as apprentice Henry, son of George Ord.

Almost every name on the list could be identified from the Burgess Roll and Parish Registers.
