"Of Christ Church Oxon; D.D.; Vicar of Woodhorn, Northumberland, 1630, Rector of Whitburn, 1631, and of Washington, 1640, Canon of York, 1641, of Salisbury, 1645 (installed 1660), of Durham, 1649 (installed 1660), was deprived in "ye time of ye Rebellion" and taught in a School at Dublin and Hayes in Middlesex, D.D. by diploma, 1661; Sub-Dean and Canon of Westminster, 1662, died 18 July, 1670, aged 70, buried in Westminster Abbey.

DARLINGTON WARD.

The returns from this ward contain twenty-two* parishes and a list of officials.

They are classified as "D.N." nos. 1-23.

The original cover is in the bundle and is endorsed "The whole Returne of Darnton ward in the County of Durham as wthin is written." Pinned to the cover is a contemporary label apparently cut from an outer cover marked "Protestacon's Return, Durham 220 Martÿ, 1641," and "and also two impressions of a seal bearing the Eden (?) arms, three wheatsheaves and crest, an embowed arm in armour, the hand holding a dagger.

Auckland, February the 17th, 1641. Accordinge to the purporte of a Letter from Mr. Speaker of the honorable house of Commons, wee hearewith returne the names of all the Ministers, Churchwardens, Constables, and Ouerseers for the poore within the seuerall parishes of Darnton Ward, beinge one of the foure Divisions of this County, who tooke the Protestacon in our prsence, as also who were absent and who refused, together with the returne unto us from euery seuerall parish within the saide warde of all those that did take and who refused to take the

same.
