NEW YORK THIS series of Biographical Sketches of Hymn-Writers was the last contribution of Dr. Hatfield to hymnology,-a subject that deeply interested him during his ministry of over half a century. The manuscript was left, at his death, nearly ready for the press. A few unimportant changes have been made, and an index of the principal hymns of the authors noticed in these sketches has been added. The work is now issued in response to many requests for its publication, with the hope that it may interest the general reader, and prove a useful addition to the literature of the subject.
