CHAPMAN AND HALL'S

MONTHLY SERIES

OF

Original Works

OF

FICTION, BIOGRAPHY, & GENERAL LITERATURE.

ENLARGED PLAN.

THE MONTHLY SERIES has been hitherto restricted to Novels and Biography. Its plan is now enlarged, so as to include other kinds of literature.

The principle of the undertaking is to charge for Works of the first Class less than one-half the cost of an equal amount of matter in the ordinary system of publication; and it now comprizes books of Travel and of General Literature, as well as Biography and Fiction.

The separate publication of Parts having been found inconvenient to purchasers, each Work, whether in one or two volumes, is now published complete in the first instance. The number of Publications in the year will average not less than a Volume on the First of every alternate Month.

The simultaneous appearance of two Novels, by a most deservedly popular writer (The Author of "Two OLD MEN'S TALES”), one of which, in compliance with the existing system, is charged £1 11s. 6d., while the other, in its place, in the MONTHLY SERIES, is sold in volumes for 18s., may be referred to as a practical illustration of the scheme which is now enlarged; of which the efficiency is in all respects increased; and in which Works of the most distinguished Writers will continue to be presented, with no sacrifice of typographical excellence, at one-half the sum of the customary modes of publication.

CHAPMAN AND HALL'S MONTHLY SERIES.

Works already Published.
FATHER DARCY.

An Historical Romance.

By THE AUTHOR OF "TWO OLD MEN'S TALES," "MOUNT SOREL," &c. In two vols. cloth, price 18s.

"This, like most of the productions of its writer, is a remarkable book. For deep and just feeling, for judgment, power, discrimination of character, and delicate perception of moral and physical beauty, few recent publications can compare with FATHER DARCY."-Examiner.

"This is another contribution to that very excellent Monthly Series of original works, which Messrs. Chapman and Hall are periodically giving to the world-original works of a high order of merit, published with every pos. sible mechanical advantage, at less than half the price commonly fixed upon books of a similar character. The attempt to break through the old conventional bondage of the "three volumes octavo" is one which ought to meet with every encouragement from the public, for the public assuredly is a great gainer by the change. We may instance the work now before us as a striking proof of the advantages of the new system. It is from the pen of one of the most accomplished fiction-writers of the day; it contains, in its two volumes, the same quantity of matter as an ordinary three-volume novel. The paper, the printing, the binding, the general 'getting-up,' are much superior to those used in the common high-priced Novels; but the work is sold for 18s. instead of for a guinea and a half, at which price another Novel, by the same authoress, published about the same time, is now selling. The cheaper work is the more convenient and the more elegant-better suited, on the former account, to the portmanteau or the travelling carriage; and, on the latter, to the shelves of the library."-Atlas.
