This most celebrated actor of the eighteenth century took part as an amateur in Fielding's play, The Mock Doctor. He made his debut at Goodman's Fields in 1741, soon "taking the town by storm," and holding the first rank until his death when he was accorded a public funeral and a resting place in Westminster Abbey. He created the part of Millamour in Fielding's Wedding Day. He acted in others of his dramas. He revived Shakesperian plays and introduced the device of footlights. In both comedy and tragedy he was master, and in private life also he was popular.
