Indenture of grant by John Brandling of Newcastle, merchant, to Ralph Hampsterle, master, and the fellows of University college (as above described) and their successors, of a yearly rent of 18s 4d issuing out of the premises described in the last preceding deed. 314.-1 August, 5 Hen. VIII. (1513). Indenture (in English) between Rauf Hamstrelle Clerk Master and keper of the gret hall or college called the Vniuersite College in Oxford and the felows of the same place' of the one part and John Brandling of Newcastle, merchant, of the other part. Reciting that the Master and fellows were seised of a yearly rent charge of 44s going out of a messuage in the Cloth market lately of Robert Roodes and then of John Brandling, between a tenement in which Robert Chamber lately dwelt, and then in the tenure of the said John Brandling on the south, a tenement lately in the tenure of Robert Hogeson on the north, and extending from the King's street on the west to borne or water' called Lortborn on the east, which the said John had of the feoffment of Richard Baynbrig and Alice his wife, daughter and heir of John Rodes deceased, which rent charge was given to the predecessors of the said master and fellows and their successors by one Alice Besels widowe (sic) for the keeping of an anniversary or obit yearly with placebo and dirige and mass of Requiem at Michaelmas for the soul of the said Alice Besels and the souls of her good friends and all Christian souls; that the said messuage was then by desolation so sore wasted ruinous and fallen in decay that the repairing thereof was not like to be had without the great cost and importable charges of the said John Brandling. The said Master and fellows granted to the said John Brandling his heirs and assigns 25s 8d parcel of the said 44s rent, saving 18s 4d which John Brandlyng for himself, his heirs and assigns agreed to pay. If the said rent of 18s 4d'or eny parcell ther of be behynd and not paid at eny of the seid festes in which it out to be paid by the space of twelve moneths then next ensuyng and it ther be resonably axed it shall be lawful for the Master and fellows and their successors to re-enter. Grant and demise to fee farm by Alan son of William de Fergham, to Elizabeth widow of John Lamlee of Newcastle, of a messuage in which Elizabeth was then living, in le baillyegate of Newcastle, between land of John de Stanhopp, west, and land of Laurence de Acton, east, and extending from the highway to land held by William Deseburgh, yielding to grantor 4s and to John de Vaus and his heirs 4s yearly. Covenant by Elizabeth to maintain and repair. John de Stanhope, bailiff, mayor and M.P. for Newcastle, was merchant, dealing in wool and hides, and in wine. In 1361 he sold land at Aldin Grange to Roger Cowhird (Dur. Treas., 1. 7. Spec. 23, 25).

318.-Wednesday after Nativity of S. John the Baptist (29 June) 1373. Conditions of bond for securing quiet enjoyment and further assurance of the same premises by Alan de Ferghham to Elizabeth Lamlee. (M.C. 6620)

319.-7 March, 14 Ric. II (1391). Bond of Alan de Fergham, son of William de Fergham given to sir William de Esyngton, burgess of Newcastle, to secure payment of 100s at Michaelmas ensuing. (M.C. 6749)

William Esyngton or Essington was a merchant and alderman of Newcastle, and mayor in 1407. His will is printed in 2 Sur. Soc., p. 59.

320.-6 April, 1392. Grant by Emma de Lamley daughter and heir of Elizabeth who was the wife of John de Lamley of Newcastle, to William de Esyngton, burgess of Newcastle, of a messuage in Newcastle in the street called 'le Baille gatte,' between land late of John de Stanhop, west, and land of Laurence de Acton, east, and extending from the highway on the north to land of William de Desbrugh behind on the south. Demise to farm by Robert Claxton knight, to Thomas Hanny and Mary his wife of a tenement in Baylygate between tenements of Richard Stevynson east, and Agnes Spicer, west, and extending from the highway on the north to a tenement late of John Desburgh in which Hugh Bent then lived on the south, for their lives and the life of the survivor, rendering 8s yearly at the feasts of S. 325.-Saturday, eve of apostles Peter and Paul (28 June) 1292. Hugh de Clyvendun, son and heir of Thomas de Clyvendun, has inspected a charter which his father made to Alan de Langton, burgess of Berwick, and Katherine his wife, as follows:

Grant by Thomas de Clyvedun to Alan de Langton and Katherine his wife, of a messuage to the west of Tyne Bridge in the fee of Balliol in the town of Newcastle in which Adam ' clericus' used to reside, lying between land of Peter Sameson and а little common grip (communem grippam) and extending from the highway to the Tyne, also a garden in the same town in a street called Ratunrau, in the same fee, between land late of Henry Wyche and land of Dionisia benett, extending from the highway to land of Peter Craw, rendering yearly a rose at the feast of S. John the Baptist. Witnesses, Wyscard de Charun, Thomas de Karliolo, Henry Scot, Gilbert Gategang, John Fleming, Hugh de Karliolo,

We have records of two persons of the name of Adam clericus,' otherwise Adam de Novo Castro. The earlier of the two was probably clerk of the town court in succession to Mauger (Malgerus clericus). He witnessed, among other deeds, no. 94 (c. 1220-30), a deed dated 25

February 1245 (N.C.H. vii, p, 332) and another of about the same date (Brit. Mus. Add. Ch. 20529). He was bailiff in mayoral years of Peter Scot and Henry de Karliolo, and with Laurence the priest, was a keeper of the Bridge for a period between 1250 and 1259. There are references in the Newminster Chartulary to his ownership of land in Milburn and Higham; he also owned land at Stickley (Ancient Deeds, B 4613-4717, 4628, 4631, 8267). About the year 1259 he was succeeded by his son-inlaw Bartholomew the clerk, son of Edmund de Pampeden, who had married Adam's daughter Dionisia. The deed B 4617 above cited is a grant by Adam witnessed by Nicholas Scot as mayor and by Bartholomew.

Bartholomew was succeeded by his son Adam clericus' who in 1296 was assessed for subsidy at Apperley (P.R.O. Lay Subsidies, 158/1).

326.-1292-94. Grant by Henry, son and heir of the late Ralph Schepe of Newcastle, to John, called Syre, of Jarrow, and Alice his wife, and their heirs, of land in Newcastle on the Castle heugh (hogam Castelli) between the heugh path (via hoge) and the stream towards the west, and between land of Adam Jargon and land of Hugh de Felton, rendering to the chief lords of the fee the farm due and to the grantor a root of ginger at Christmas. In default of issue born to the grantees, the land to revert to grantor and his heirs. Witnesses, Sir Hugh Gobyon, sheriff of Northumberland and keeper of Newcastle, Robert de Midford, William de Oggle, Thomas de Qkeham, John de Heton, bailiffs, Walter de Cugate, Roger de Ponte, John Trotaund, John de Pytington, William de Ware, Walter de Burneton, William Lymebrenner. Thomas de Queneby or Whenby paid subsidy on 28s in S. Nicholas parish in 1296 (Arch. Ael. 3 ser. xiii, p. 300).

328.-Monday, the morrow of S. Dunstan the bishop (20 May) 1308. Grant by Alan de Langton and Katherine his wife, to Ingelram de Colonya burgess of Newcastle and Johanna his wife of a messuage in Newcastle in 'le Clos' in the fee of Balliol between land of Thomas de Frismarisco, late of Peter son of Sampson, and land of John Crawe, late of Simon with the beard and extending from the highway to the Tyne, and of the garden (as described in preceding deed 325). To hold to them and to the survivor of them and to the heirs and assigns of Ingelram. Oath by Katherine between the four benches.
