That a book of Early Deeds relating to Newcastle upon Tyne, under the general editorship of Mr. Arthur Maule Oliver, be the volume for the year 1924.'

PREFACE.

This volume contains transcripts or abstracts of four collections of pre-Reformation deeds relating to Newcastle upon Tyne, namely: (1) deeds of the Hospital of the Virgin Mary of Westgate enrolled in the Liber Cartarum of the Newcastle Corporation (2) deeds of the Tyne Bridge enrolled in the same book (3) a calendar of deeds in the possession of University College, Oxford, relating to lands and rents in Newcastle formerly belonging to the College, and (4) a calendar of deeds. relating to Newcastle in the Treasury of the Dean and Chapter of Durham. There are added abstracts of a few deeds ancillary to collections 1 and 2.

THE LIBER CARTARUM.

2. The Liber Cartarum is a leather bound book 15 inches by 11 inches, containing sixty-seven parchment leaves, in which there have been enrolled at various times a number of miscellaneous documents. It is one of the few muniments of the corporation of Newcastle upon Tyne which escaped destruction by the Scots in 1644. It was apparently rebound in the eighteenth century as the water mark on the fly leaves is one which was in use from 1722 to 1770. The following is a list of its contents:

p. 1. Charter of Henry III to the good men of Newcastle, dated 2 July, 1234, granting the liberty that no Jew shall reside in the Town. The original of this charter is lost, and no enrolment of it, other than this, is known. It is referred to in Mag. Rot. Pipa, col. 173, and see Madox, Exchequer, i, p. 260; Brand, ii, p. 140.

Charter of Henry III to the good men of Newcastle, also dated 2 July, 1234. (Carte Antiquæ, Roll 1, 18; printed in Brand, ii, p. 139, note h, where the names of some of the witnesses are omitted.)

p. 2. Charter of Edward I dated 8 December, 1293 (Charter Roll, 22 Edw. I, no. 30) inspecting and confirming last preceding charter and letters patent of Henry III dated 18 October, 1252 (Cal. Pat., 1247-58, p. 153). The latter document is printed in full in Brand, ii, p. 141, note n, where it is assigned to the year 1253 (Cal. Chart. ii, p. 434).
