ignorance fwallow, have been comprehended; fince it is ftill capable of being so explained, as to mean any thing that an artful preacher pleases to impofe on an illiterate audience, the laying too great a stress upon it must be highly dangerous to the religion and liberties of mankind: but the propofing it as a compofition for moral duties is of all others the most mischievous doctrine; as it unhinges all our notions of divine juftice, and establishes wickedness upon a principle; and it is the more mischievous, as it cannot fail of being popular, because, as it is ufually inculcated, it is in fact nothing more than offering to the people a licence to be profligate, at the easy price of being abfurd; a bargain, which they will ever readily
