The tide, on Friday morning the 21st uk. flowed two hours longer than the ufual time of high water at Shields, and rofe to the height of a common fpring tide, although the moon was then only a quarter old. On the morning followng, it did not rife fo high by fix feet; the atmosphere at that time looked particularly lucid and troubled, the barometer landing at 28.6. A tremendous gale of wind followed on Saturday night, accompanied by hail and rain, and the fea on Sunday exhibited an appearance truly terrific. The tide rofe eight feet higher than the preceding morning tide. We fear much damage is done among the fhipping on the coaft.

About three o'clock on Wednesday, a fire broke out in a house at Preston, Bear Yeovil, which, for nearly three hours, threatened the whole town with deftruction.

LIFE

OF

DOCTOR BENJAMIN FRANKLIN.

(Written by Himself.)

(Continued from p. 36.)

WHEN

HEN about fixteen years of age, a work of Tryon fell into my hands, in which he recommends vegetable diet. I determined to obferve it. My brother then being a batchelor, kept no table, but boarded with his apprentices in a neighbouring house. My refufal to eat animal food, was found inconvenient, and I was frequently colded for my fingularity. I attended to the mode in which Tryon prepared fome of his articles of provifion, particularly how to boil potatoes and rice, and how to make hafty puddings. I then faid to my brother, that if he would allow me per week, half the fum which he paid for my board, I would undertake to maintain myfelf. The offer was inftantly embraced, and I foon found, that of what he gave me, I was able to fave half. This was a new fund for the purchase of books; and other advantages refulted to me from the plan. When my brother and his

workmen quitted the printing-house to go to dinner, I remained behind, and difpatching my frugal repaft, which often confifted of a biscuit only, or a flice of bread, with a bunch of raifins, or a bun from the pastry-cooks, and a glass of water, I had the rest of the time, till their return, for study; and my progress therein was proportioned to that clearness of ideas and quickness of conception, which are the fruit of temperance in eating and drinking.

It was at this period that, having one day been put to the blush for my ignorance in the art of calculation, which I had twice failed to learn while at fchool, that I took Cocker's Treatife of Arithmetic, and went through it by myself with the utmoft facility. I alfo read a book on Navigation by Seller and Sturmy, and made myself master of the little geometry it contains, but I never proceeded far in this fcience. Nearly at the fame time, I read Locke on the Human Understanding, and the Art of Thinking by Meffrs. du PortRoyal.

While labouring to form and improve my ftyle, I met with an Eng lifh grammar, which I believe was Greenwood's, at the end of which are two little effays on rhetoric and logic. In the latter I found a model
