THIS work on Universal History comprehends the whole course of Lectures on that subject delivered by the Author, while Professor of Civil History and Greek and Roman Antiquities in the University of Edinburgh. The work entitled ELEMENTS OF HISTORY, by the same author, was, originally, merely the heads or outlines of this course of lectures. It was afterwards enlarged so as to form a Syllabus to the general reader of history; and has been so favorably received by the public as to go through numerous editions in this country, and also in America; and to have been adopted as a manual in not a few Universities.

The complete work is now, for the first time, given to the public. The preparation of it for the press was the last of the fterary labors of its distinguished Author. Nor did he live to complete it; but the constant attention of thirty years, and its annual revision during the greater part of that period, had left Ittle to its Editor. W. F. T.
