There were no perpetual vicars, hence each portioner (canon) was a parochial rector. Each portioner is to have a perpetual vicar instead of a priest engaged by the year. Prebends are not to be farmed until conversation on the subject shall have been had with the archb. (Mem. of Ripon, ii, 15).
