Germany. The admirable paper by Mr. De Morgan, at the end of the third volume, speaks for itself. In acknowledging the kindness of Lady Byron's relatives, in regard to the letters by her, the Editor cannot but add the expression of a hope, that, before long, the public may have the opportunity of a fuller acquaintance with the correspondence of one capable of writing such letters.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

THE changes in this edition consist chiefly of corrections, for some of which the Editor has to thank readers of the first. A few foot-notes have been added; in Page 345, Vol. I., and Page 177, Vol. III., some new matter has been introduced in the place of passages which have been left out. Two letters (Pages 139 and 468, Vol. III., of the First Edition), which had been misplaced, will now be found under their proper dates. The copious Index has been revised, and in part re-arranged; and accidental omissions have been supplied.

A relative of Mrs. Clarkson, referring to Page 31, Vol. I., in which she is said to have praised Godwin's "Political Justice," has objected to the statement, as likely to give the false impression, that she sympathized with Godwin in his views of morality. Had the communication reached the Editor in time, he would have inserted a note at the proper place, to prevent such a misapprehension.

ERRATUM.

Vol. II. p. 260, lines 4 and 8, for Lord Ellenborough read Chief Justice Abbott.

This simple correction will extricate the reader from what the Edinburgh Reviewer represents as a labyrinth of inconsistencies.
