ARE YOU SAFE?

I MEAN, is your soul safe? Sin has placed us all in circumstances of imminent danger, because it has made us the enemies of God, it has provoked his wrath, and he has threatened in his word to punish all obstinate sinners. As sinners we are in danger of sudden death, of eternal separation from God, and of sinking into that dreadful hell prepared for the devil and his angels. This is the state of all who are out of Christ, for as there was no safety from the deluge in the days of Noah, but in the ark, so now there is no safety from the dreadful wrath of God, but in Christ.

Jesus is to the sinner now, what the ark was to Noah then. The world then did not believe the threatening of God, and therefore did not seek safety in the ark, and consequently perished: so sinners now do not believe the threatenings of God as recorded in his word, and therefore it is that they do not seek safety in Jesus. There was only one ark then, and all out of that ark were destroyed; so there is but one way of salvation now, and that is by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. It was not enough to hear of the ark, or to talk of the ark, but those who would be safe must enter into the ark; so it is not enough to hear of Christ, or to talk of Christ, but we must be united to Christ by a living faith.

When we believe what God has said in his word respecting the person, obedience, sufferings, death, and intercession of Jesus, we exercise confidence in him to save us from our sins, from Satan, and from the wrath of God; and when we exercise this confidence in Jesus, we become interested in all he did, entitled to all his promises, and admitted into fellowship with God. Our sins are pardoned. God is our Father. The Holy Ghost is our Teacher and Comforter. WE ALE SAFE. The law has been fulfilled for us. Justice has been satisfied for us. Satan has been conquered for us. make intercession for us. ven is opened to us.

Reader, are you safe? Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? Are you placing your whole dependence on the finished work of Jesus? Do you love his person? Do you rely on his atoning blood? Do you plead his precious name for your acceptance with God? Do you renounce your own works, your tears, your prayers, your feelings, your ALL before God, and trust in Jesus ALONE? Do you endeavour to obey his precepts, aiming simply at his glory? If so, you are safe: and the proof is, you hate all sin and pant for holi

THE PRAYER MEETING.

My dear friend, do you attend the prayer meeting? Perhaps you do not understand its nature. It is a meeting of the Lord's people to pray for each other, and for the world at large. Jesus is always there, for he has said, "Where two or three meet together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." He always approves of prayer, but he has made special promises to united prayer. It is therefore important that prayer meetings should be kept up. Every Christian who can, ought to attend them. If you would meet your Saviour, sympathize with your brethren, and seek the salvation of sinners around you, never neglect the prayer meetings.

Its tendency is, to unite the saints together, to quicken the graces of the Spirit, to revive pure religion, and bring down the blessing of God upon saints and sinners. We have no hope that the chruch will prosper if the prayer meetings are neglected, or if they are only attended in a formal customary way. The prayers offered should be short, warm from the heart, and every word spoken as if it was really meant. All present should join in heart. Is a brother dull in prayer? Pray

God to quicken him. Is he formal? Pray that the value of souls may be laid on his heart. Never forget, never neglect, never let a trifling matter keep you from the prayer meeting.

Always go to pray for some particular blessing, or some particular person. Have your errand ready before you reach the place of meeting. If all the members of a church rightly valued prayer meetings; if all whọ could attended them; if all who attend wrestled with God; if there was a holy determination among the Lord's people to plead until they pravail, God would soon open the windows of heaven and pour us out a blessing. Then saints would be lively, the churches unit. ed, sinners called by grace, and God greatly glorified.

Have you neglected the prayer meeting? Realize it as a neglect of duty, and determine to neglect it no longer. Go to the very next that is held, if possible. Call upon some one who does not go, and try to induce him to attend. Pray before you go, pray as you go, pray while there, and pray when you retire, that God would pour out his blessing upon his church. We shall never see great things until our prayer meetings are lively, spiritual, and crowded. Never forget the prayer meeting, whatever you forget.

THE POSITION AND PRACTICE OF

THE BRIDE.

"The Bride saith, Come."-Rev. xxii. 17.

[ocr errors]

THE Church of God, quickened and sanctified by the Holy Ghost, is the Bride of Christ. It is of his Church, and every individual member of that Church, he speaks, when he says, I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in loving-kindness, and in mercies. Yea, I will betroth thee unto me in faithfulness, and thou shalt know the Lord." By nature we are far from him, strangers to him, and at enmity with him." The very last thing we should think of, desire, or seek, should be union to Christ. But he sends his servants, as Abraham did Eliezer, to take a wife for him. They come and proclaim his love, commend his person, exhibit his portrait, and invite us to him. The Spirit of God attends them in their work, crowns their efforts, and union with Christ is the result. We feel our need of him, our affections are raised and go out after him; we heartily and earnestly seek him, we are introduced to him:
