ARISTUS,

&c. &c.

SINCE term is closed, and you no longer hear
The noise and nonsense of a wrangling bar,
But 'midst those scenes, where Nore meand'ring flows,
Enjoy the calm of dignified repose ;*

Graced, as you are, by art and nature, fit
To point the bright artillery of wit; †
To lash, yet please, and shew each silly elf,
Offensive sight, the picture of itself;

* Eum vitæ cursum tenere potuisti, ut in negotiô sine periculo, vel in otio cum dignitate esse possis.

† Aciem intendere ingenii, ipsissimamque ipsi ridiculi formam osten

tare.

Or, roused in truth's and virtue's sacred cause,
Direct the wrath of violated laws;

Say, shall the Muse with noiseless step intrude,
And break the stillness of your solitude;
In modest converse touch the varying theme,
The poet's vision, or the sophist's dream?
Whilst kindly you her devious course attend,
Blame where you must, but where you can commend;
Forgive small errors, fan her borrowed fire,
And, where you see her falter, deign t' inspire; (a)
Inspired by you, she dares the boisterous tide,
You as her star, and HORACE as her guide.

Say, should a painter of the modern school, *
To hit the taste of some congenial fool,
Unite deformity with perfect grace,
Old S―'s person with EMILIA's face;
Combine, as ornaments, discordant things,
Trick it with hair, or feather it with wings;
Then, big with hopes to rival Rome and Greece,
Require your judgment of this precious piece ;-

* Humano capiti cervicem pictor equinam
Jungere si velit, et varias inducere plumas,
Undique collatis membris; ut turpiter atrum
Desinat in piscem, mulier formosa supernè
Spectatum admissi risum teneatis amici.
