[C.--3914.] Price 2d. A CONVENTION between Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the South African Republic. Whereas the Government of the Transvaal State, through its Delegates, consisting of Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, President of the said State, Stephanus Jacobus Du Toit, Superintendent of Education, and Nicholas Jacobus Smit, a member of the Volksraad, have represented that the Convention signed at Pretoria on the 3rd day of August 1881, and ratified by the Volksraad of the said State on the 25th October 1881, contains certain provisions which are inconvenient, and imposes burdens and obligations from which the said State is desirous to be relieved, and that the south-western boundaries fixed by the said Convention should be amended, with a view to promote the peace and good order of the said State, and of the countries adjacent thereto; and whereas Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, has been pleased to take the said representations into consideration: Now, therefore, Her Majesty has been pleased to direct, and it is hereby declared, that the following articles of a new Convention, signed on behalf of Her Majesty by Her Majesty's High Commissioner in South Africa, the Right Honourable Sir Hercules George Robert Robinson, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Governor of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope, and on behalf of the Transvaal State (which shall herein-after be called the South African Republic) by the above-named Delegates, Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, Stephanus Jacobus Du Toit, and Nicholas Jacobus Smit, shall, when ratified by the Volksraad of the South African Republic, be substituted for the articles embodied in the Convention of 3rd August 1881; which latter, pending such ratification, sball continue in full force and effect. ARTICLE I. CONVENTIE tusschen Hare Majesteit de Koningin van het Vereenigd Koningrijk van Groot Brittannie en Ierland en de Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek. Daar de regeering van den Transvaal Staat, door zijne afgevaardigden Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, President van genoemden Staat, Stephanus Jacobus du Toit, Superintendent van onderwijs, en Nicolaas Jacobus Smit, lid van den Volksraad, hebben voorgedraagen, dat de Conventie geteekend te Pretoria, op den derden Augustus 1881, en die bekrachtigd is door den Volksraad van genoemden Staat op 25 October 1881, zekere bepalingen bevat die ondoeltreffend zijn en lasten en verplichtingen oplegt waarvan genoemde Staat begeert ontslagen te worden; en dat de Zuid Westelijke grenzen door genoemde Conventie vastgesteld behooren te worden gewijzigd met het doel om den vrede en de goede orde in genoemden Staat en in de daaraangrenzende landen te bevorderen; en daar Het Hare Majesteit de Koningin van het Vereenigd Koningrijk en Ierland behaagd heeft de genoemde voorstellen in overweging te nemen, heeft het Hare Majesteit thans behaagd te gelasten, en bij dese wordt verklaard dat de volgende Artikelen van eene nieuwe Conventie, onderteekend in naam van Hare Majesteit door Harer Majesteit's Hoogen Commissaris in Zuid Afrika, den Hoog Edelen Sir Hercules George Robert Robinson, Ridder Grootkruis van de verheven Orde van St. Michael en St. George, Gouverneur van de Kolonie de Kaap de Goede Hoop, en in naam van den Transvaal Staat (die hierin nader genoemd worden zal de Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek), door de bovenge. noemde afgevaardigden Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, Stephanus Jacobus Du Toit, en Nicolaas Jacobus Smit, zullen. na bekrachtiging door den Volksraad van de Zuid Afrikaansche Repuliek, in plaats gesteld worden van de Artikelen vervat in de Conventie van 3 Augustus 1881; welke laatstgenoemde, zoolang zulke bekrachtiging niet zal zijn geschied in volle kracht en werking blijven zal. ARTICLES. The Territory of the South African Republic will embrace the land lying between the following boundaries, to wit: ARTIKEL I. Het gebied der Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek zal het land omvatten dat tusschen de volgende grenzen ligt, te weten: Beginnende van het punt waar de Noord Oostelijke grenslijn van Griqualand West Beginning from the point where the north-eastern boundary line of Griqualand O 90310. A 2 West meets the Vaal River, up the course of the Vaal River to the point of junction with it of the Klip River; thence up the course of the Klip River to the point of junction with it of the stream called Gansvlei; thence up the Gansvlei stream to its source in the Drakensberg; thence to a beacon in the boundary of Natal, situated immediately opposite and close to the source of the Gansvlei stream; thence in a northeasterly direction along the ridge of the Drakensberg, dividing the waters flowing into the Gansvlei stream from the waters flowing into the sources of the Buffalo, to a beacon on a point where this mountain ceases to be a continuous chain; thence to a beacon on a plain to the north-east of the last described beacon; thence to the nearest source of a small stream called "Division Stream; thence down this division stream, which forms the southern boundary of the farm Sandfontein, the property of Messrs. Meek, to its junction with the Coldstream; thence down the Coldstream to its junction with the Buffalo or Umzinyati River; thence down the course of the Buffalo River to the junction with it of the Blood River; thence up the course of the Blood River to the junction with it of Lyn Spruit or Dudusi; thence up the Dudusi to its source; thence 80 yards to Bea. I., situated on a spur of the N'QabaKa-hawana Mountains; thence SO yards to the N'Sonto River; thence down the N'Sonto River to its junction with the White Umvulozi River; thence up the White Umvulozi River to a white rock where it rises; thence 800 yards to Kambula Hill (Bea. II.); thence to the source of the Pemvana River, where the road from Kambula Camp to Burgers' Lager crosses; thence down the Pemvana River to its junction with the Bivana River; thence down the Bivana River to its junction with the Pongolo River; thence down the Pongolo River to where it passes threugh the Libombo Range; thence along the summits of the Libombo Range to the northern point of the N'Yawos Hill in that range (Bea. XVI.); thence to the northern peak of the Inkwakweni Hills (Bea. XV.); thence to Sefunda, a rocky knoll detached from and to the north-east end of the White Koppies, and to the south of the Musana River (Bea. XIV.); thence to a point on the slope near the crest of Matanjeni, which is the name given to the south-eastern portion of the Mahamba Hills (Bea. XIII.); thence to the N'gwangwana, a doublepointed hill (one point is bare, the other wooded, the beacon being on the former), on the left bank of the Assegai River and upstream of the Dadusa Spruit (Bea. XII.); thence to the southern point of Bendita, a de Vaai rivier snijdt, langs den stroom van de Vaal rivier naar het punt waar de Vaal rivier en de Klip rivier zich vereenigen; van daar langs den stroom van de Klip rivier naar het punt waar deze en de stroom Gansvlei genaamd zich vereenigen; van daar langs den stroom van de Gansvlei tot naar haren oorsprong in den Drakensberg; van daar naar een baken op de grenslijn van Natal, gelegen recht tegenover en dicht bij den oorsprong van den Gansvlei stroom; van daar in een Noord Oostelijke richting langs den rand van den Drakensberg, het water dat in den Gansvlei stroom vloeit afscheidende van het water dat in den oorsprong van de Buffalo valt naar een baken op een punt waar deze berg ophoudt een aaneengeschakelde keten te zijn; van daar naar een baken op een vlakte ten Noordoosten van laatstgenoemde baken; van daar naar den naasten oorsprong van een kleinen stroom genaamd "Division Stream"; van daar af langs dezen verdeelings stroom, die de zuidelijke grens is van de plaats Zandfontein het eigendom van de Heeren Meek, tot zijn vereeniging met den Coldstream ; van daar langs den Coldstream tot zijn vereeniging met de Buffalo of Umzinyati rivier; van daar af langs den stroom van de Buffalo rivier tot waar de Bloed rivier zich daarmee vereenigt; van daar langs den stroom van de Bloed rivier tot waar Lijn spruit of Dudusi zich daarmee vereenigt; van daar langs de Dudusi tot aan haren oorsprong; van daar 80 yards naar Baken I. gelegen op een afzet van de N'Qaba-Kahawana bergen; van daar 80 yards naar de N'Sonto rivier; van daar langs de N'Sonto rivier tot waar deze zich met de Witte Umvulozi rivier vereenigt; van daar langs de Witte Umvulozi rivier tot naar een witte rots waar zij ontspringt; van daar 800 yards naar Kambula heuvel (Baken II.); van daar naar den oorsprong van de Pemvana rivier, waar de weg van Kambula kamp naar Burgers' Lager doorgaat; van daar langs de Pemvana rivier tot hare vereeniging met de Bivana rivier; van daar langs de Bivana rivier af tot waar zij zich met de Pongolo rivier vereenigt; van daar langs de Pongolo rivier tot waar zij door den Libombo bergketen stroomt; van daar langs de toppen van den Limbobo keten naar het noordelijke punt van den N'Yawos heuvel in dien bergketen (Baken XV.); van daar naar den noordelijken top van de Inkwakweni heuvels (Baken XV.); van daar naar Sefunda, een rotsachtige heuvel afgescheiden van en aan het noordoostelijke einde van de Witte Koppies, en ten zuiden van de Musana rivier (Baken XIV.); van daar naar een punt op de helling dicht by den top van Matanjeni as rocky knoll in a plain between the Little 66 dat de naam is gegeven aan het zuidoostelijk |
