the ecumenical spirit because "Christ cannot be divided." "The body of Christ is one."

The second part of his book is a development of virtues according to his monastic rule at Taizé in France. These chapters deal with celibacy, community property, authority and Christ's help.

In all, this modern analysis is thought-provoking, unusually practical in its outlook and possesses a sincere conviction of a God-fearing Protestant.

Book Notes

The Second Vatican Council with its emphasis on reunion has created great interest in the Churches of the East. Several books have appeared dealing with Eastern Christians. Worthy of mention is Donald Atwater's The Christian Churches of the East, Volume II: Churches not in Communion with Rome (Milwaukee: The Bruce Publishing Company, 1962, Pp. xii + 260, $7.50). This revised edition has an up to-date bibliography and new material that includes the latest reports on the number of Russian Orthodox in China, the state of monasticism in Soviet Russia, and the condition of the Serbian Patriarchate under Tito in Yugoslavia. Admittedly an oeuvre de vulgarisation, it is, nevertheless, a reliable and well-written book that can do much to dispel the ignorance among English-speaking Catholics about the Eastern Churches.

A young Russian Orthodox theologian, Father John Meyendorff, is the author of The Orthodox Church (New York: Pantheon Books, 1962, Pp. xii+244, $4.50). He discusses the history of the Orthodox Church, its role in the world today, and its theological development. Of great interest is his explanation of the Orthodox position on the ecumenical question. He regards the Protestant notion of the Church as expressed at the Evanston Assembly as a negation of the real presence of Christ in His Church. The Orthodox Church, he argues, has the unity of the One Church and summons all Christians to "a return to the faith of the Fathers and Apostles."

Another view of the Eastern Churches is seen in M. J. Le Guillou's The Spirit of Eastern Orthodoxy (New York: Hawthorn Books, Inc., 1962, Pp. 144). It is volume one hundred and thirty-five of The Twentieth Century Encyclopedia of Catholicism. The author, a French Dominican, has written

widely on ecumenical questions. He rightly points out that ecclesiological differences are the most significant elements in the East-West separation. Without minimizing doctrinal differences nor ignoring previous Eastern Reactions against Roman attempts at reunion, Father Le Guillou is still optimistic. "A mutual rediscovery of brothers," he writes, "is called for."

From Ireland comes a useful book on pastoral psychiatry edited by Fr. E. F. O'Doherty and Dr. S. Desmond McGrath. The Priest and Mental Health (Dublin: Clonmore and Reynolds Ltd., 1962, Pp. x + 249, 25/-) is a collection of papers by priests and psychiatrists which were originally read at the Stillorgan Conference held in Dublin in 1960. There are chapters on the problem of scruples, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and spiritual direction, alcoholism and sexual deviations. It is not intended to be a popular work nor is it a purely theoretical treatment. Rather, it is a straightforward discussion of mental health which provides the priest with valuable insights into many pastoral problems.

Father Gormely, C.M., examines a specific problem of medical ethics in his excellent work on Medical Hypnosis (Washington: The Catholic University of America Press, 1961, Pp. xi + 168, $2.75). He presents an historical introduction to the morality of hypnosis in the light of papal, theological, and medical teaching. It is a dissertation in the School of Sacred Theology at Catholic University which was directed by Fr. John Shinners. It is well written and avoids the tiresome style overburdened with clichés that is common to many dissertations. The bibliography is most thorough and a valuable addition is the appendix that considers moral responsibility in hypnosis.
