D THE ANNUAL REGISTER: A REVIEW OF PUBLIC EVENTS AT HOME AND ABROAD, FOR THE YEAR 1879. NEW SERIES. LONDON: RIVINGTONS, WATERLOO PLACE. LONGMANS & CO.; SIMPKIN, MARSHALL, & CO.; HAMILTON & CO. J. WHELDON; R. WASHBOURNE; AND RIVINGTONS, OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE. 1880. A WITH the present volume-the seventeenth of the New Series-the Annual Register' enters upon the 122nd year of its publication. The newly-appointed Editor, whilst conscious of the disadvantages under which he labours in assuming a post filled by so many men of recognised ability, hopes with the help of competent colleagues to maintain the past reputation of the Work. Some few changes are introduced, which the Editor trusts may meet with general approval. The Annual Register' aims at preserving for future students an absolutely impartial record of contemporary history; accordingly the survey of Home politics and the history of Public Opinion during the year are intended to show no political bias, but to review dispassionately the course of events in Parliament and in the country. Many events not immediately connected with the political history of the year, which, although important in themselves, would impede the course of its narrative, will be found transferred to the Chronicle. |
