16 Sept., 1560. Sir Arthure Darcy, knighte. To Henry Darcy my sonne and heire all that the sighte and demeane landes of the late monasterie of Salley in the countie of Yorke, the moyetie of the manner of Bolton in the saide countie, the lordeshipp and mannor of Aldeondesbury, and the chaunteries in Thornebury in the countie of Glocester, and all that my mannor of Hutton Rudby alias Hutton iuxta

Rudbie in the countie of Yorke and to the heires males of the said Henry, and for defalte of suche issue the remainder thereof to Thomas Darcie one other of the sonnes of me, and to the heires of the saide Thomas, and for defalte to Edwarde Darcie one other of the sonnes of me, and for defalte to Arthure Darcie one other of the sonnes of me, and for defalte to Nicholas Darcie one other of the sonnes of me, and for defalte to John Darcie one other of the sonnes of me, and for defalte to Frauncis one other of the sonnes of me, and for defalte to the righte heires of me. To John Darcie my sonne my mannor of Potter Newton, otherwyse called Stothall, in the countie of Yorke, of the yerely value of xxv li., and all those landes in Ardenside whiche I now have in fee farme of the graunte of the late Kinge Edwarde the Sixte, and my ij messuages called Gatecote and Cowath in Arden and Ardenside, the remainder to Nicolas, Frauncis, Edward and to the righte heires of me. To Frauncis Darcie my sonne all my mannor and forrest of Gysborne in the countie of Yorke, and ixcloses in Gonby and Brotofte in the county of Lyncolne, the remainder to John, Arthure, Nicholas Darcie and to the righte heires of me, which are of the yerely rente of xl li. ix s. vj d., whereof there is yerely payed for tenthes lv s. and so remaineth xxxvij li. xiiij s. vj d. And for as moche as by the Quenes maiesties lawes I oughte to leave to dissende to suche person or persons as shalbe myne heire or heires the full thirde parte of all my mannors, landes etc., I therefore leave unto my saide heire all my mannor of Brymbem alias Brymham with Dacre and parcell of the mannor of Beverle in the countie of Yorke of the yerely rente of xvj li. xvij s. xj d., and all my mannor of Gisborne and landes in Gisbourne of the yerely value of xiiij li. viij s. viij d., all my graunge of Ellingthorpp in the countie of Yorke of the yerely value of xij li. viij d., and my manor of Staynton of the value of xxx li. xix s., all my landes etc. in Swynden, Galbergh, Newsam, Horton, Holgill, Remington, Newby, Rawthemell, Cleitopp, Gygleswyke, Lytton, Ilkeley, Farneley and Weston in the countie of Yorke of the yerely value of xiij li. ix s., and all my landes in Gargrave now in the tenures of Thomas Tomlynson, Thomas Sympson, Nicholas Clevelande, Richarde Calverley, Thomas Thompson, Agnes Croke and John Wilson of the yerely value of iij li. ix s. iiij d., and my annual rente of vij li. x d. of landes within the towne of Grindleton, of vj s. viij d. paied yerely by the Kinge and Quenes maiestes receavor of her graces castell of Clitheroo, all my landes in Fangfose, Ayton and Hundmondbye of the rente of x li. vj s. viij d., all my landes in Chippinge, Downham and Salisbury in the countie of Lancaster of the value of xxiij s. ij d., and my rectory and personage of Gargrave of the yerely value of lv li. vj s. viij d. Provided and I desire that my heire and his heires shall paye all suche tenthes and cheef or quyt rentes as shalbe payable for the saide mannors and landes given to my saide sonnes Edwarde.

XXV. THE WILL OF JEROME GREY, OF NEWCASTLE.

13 Oct., 1560. Jerram Grey in the parrish of Saint Tyle in the Shiles* in the towne of Newcastle uppon Tyne, sailer. To David Gybbes of the parrish of Hollye crosse of Westgate next withoute the wawles of the Citie of Caunterbury all my moveable goodes as well plate, brasse, pewter, fetherbeddes, and other stuff of householde as also half a cobbe, comonly called a bote, now remaininge in the handes of my mother Agnes Graye, otherwise called Agnes Connyer, dwelling in the parrish of Sainte Tyle in the towne of Newcastell, excepte one fetherbed, and all thinges belonginge which I will unto Mawdlyn Kroche (?) my sisters daughter. Unto David Gibbes one mazer bounde with silver and gilte, in the handes of John Julians of Rye in Kente in gage for xxij s. borrowed of the saide John Julians, and also one golde ring with a stone collered redd, and one brooche of silver and gilte in the handes of Fraunces Sawyer within the watergate of Rye for viij s. of hym borrowed. Also this is the laste will of me Jerman Graye for the disposition of all my landes etc. lyenge in the parrishes of Sainte Tyle in the Shilles and Essington within the bishopricke of Durram, which I give to the saide Davide Gibbes my sole executour.

XXVI. THE WILL OF WILLIAM BERRIE, VICAR OF GILLING. (Streat, 26.)

10 April, 1561. William Berrie, Clark, Vicar of Gilling in the Countie of Yorke, soul to God, the blessed Virgin our ladie Sainte Marie, and to all the heavenly company intercessors. My carrion boddie to be buried within the Quier of the Chappell of Forset, nere unto the place where the boddie of my late father Robarte Berrie was tumelate. To every preste presente xij d. To parresh clarkes ij d, and to every other clarke jd. a pece. To my brother John Bery, to my cosen and servaunte John Berry, to my nephew James Herde, and to my servante John Johnson every one a pece, one oxe, one cowe, v withers, one fetherbed with all

thinges appertaininge. To my nephew George Bery the advouson for the nexte vacacon of Merton in the Countie of Westmerlande, with all my bookes remaining, as well at Forset as the saide Merton, and after his decesse to John Johnson, sonne to the saide Johnson, for defalte to her brother Robarte Johnson, for defalte to her brother William, and for defaulte to my next kinsman's childe. To my nephew Henry Bery my tenemente or cottage in Brampton, forseinge my olde servaunte John Rowlande be not removed during his lief. I give twentie poundes to be bestowed. amonge thinhabitantes, receiving theire sacramentes at the churche and chappell of Gylling and Forsett. To everie childe of John Johnson begotten by my nece now his wife, and to every childe of James Herde, xx s. To every my uncle and auntes children ij s. a pece. To William Tankarde, Anthonye Catterick, and Christofer Monckton, Esquiers, ij doble duckettes, desiering the same to advance the accomplishments of this my will, and in case I survive the Vicar of Bampton, Edwarde Harper, clarke, to receive the plate and debtes owen for the goodes of the late Richarde Evynwode, to bestowe the same uppon charitable workes in case no houses of religuon be reedified. 4 June, 1561. Dorothie Wyndesoure, wyddowe. To be buried in the parisshe churche of Sheffelde. To the right honorable, and my verie goode lorde, the earle of Shrewsberrie, one white geldinge of nyne, which was laste bought. To my ladie of Shrewsberrie and to my ladie Braye either of them one ringe of goulde of xx s. a pece, with theis letteres D. and W. engraven and blacke enamiled. To my verie goode ladie and aunte, the countes of Northumberlande, foure oxen and fourtie sheepe, all to be of the beste of my store. To my lorde my father a cupe of silver and gilte, withe a cover. To Fraunces Dacre, sonne to my brother
