GIULIO CESARE GAFACCIO, was born in Campania, of a poor and plebeian family. He soon distinguished himself by his talents; and was appointed Secretary of the Kingdom of Naples. Francesco della Rovera, Duke of Urbino, committed the care of his son to him; and during that period he composed the greater part of his Works. He died in 1621. VITTORIO ROSSI , already mentioned, was for 20 years Secretary to Cardinal Andrea Peretti. But a few years before he died, retired to his solitary villa on the Hill of Onofrio; where far from the turmoil of human affairs, he lived tranquilly for himself, and for his studies till his death in 1647 , at the age of 70; lamented by the learned, not less for his manners than his talents, and erudition. He was particularly favoured by Cardinal Fabio Chigi; afterwards Pope Alexander VII. J. C. Fischer has prefixed a Life of him to the new Edition of his Letters; Cologne, 1739. GIROLAMO GHILINI was born at Monza in 1589, the son of Jacopo Ghilini of Alexandria , one of the Royal and Ducal Secretaries of the Senate of Milan. He embraced the study of the Civil Law; and became a Canon of Parma: but ill health interrupted his

studies. On his recovery, having lost his father,, he married Giacintha Baliana of Alexandria ; and notwith standing the avocations of family concerns, gave himself up to the study of the Belles Lettres. On the death of his wife, he took the clerical habit, and be came a man of the Church. He now resumed the stu dy of the Law, and that of Theology and became eminent in both At length he returned to Milan, where his father for some time resided and was promoted to a Canonry of the Church of S. Ambrosio . He was the author of several pieces in poetry, and prose; besides his Teatro d' Uomini Letterati .

LORENZO CRASSo, a celebrated Italian Author, published, besides his Elogi de' Letterati which is become scarce, l'Istoria de' Poeti Greci, e di quei, che in Greca lingua han poetato; Napoli 1678., which has some defects, but has more erudition, than the other work, which is full of errors.

SALVINO SALVINI, a Canon of Florence, and illustrious Man of Letters; was born at Florence 9 Feb. 1667., and died 29. Nov. 1751, æt. 84. He had the good fortune to be instructed in literature by his elder brother the Abate Anton-Maria Salvini; and studied with particular care the antiquities of Florence. He was promoted to a Canonry of the Metropolitan church; and chosen a Member of many learned

Academies; especially of the Academy of Florence, of which the Grand Duke Gian Gaston appointed him Perpetual Consul: In 1745, he was made Arch Consul of the Academy Della Crusca. The Academy of Florence paid him high honours at his death. See a full Notice of him in the Elogi degli Uomini illustri Toscani. MICHEL GIUSEPPE MOREI, a Florentine, was born about 1695. He passed the greater part of his life in Rome; and although distracted by other cares, always indefatigably applied himself to the study of the Belles Lettres; and was Vice-Custos of the Academy of Arcadia, under Crescimbeni, and Lorenzini. He was also ad ́mitted into other Academies; and by his prose and poctry, both Latin and Italian, many of which were published, gave undoubted proofs of his talents, of his good taste; and of his zeal to encourage in Rome the love of polite literature, to the lustre of this City still famous for its eminence in the sciences and the polite Arts. On the death of Lorenzini, Custos of the Arcadia, he succeeded to this honour. Having held this situation for 24 years, he died iu Rome in 1767, at the age of 72. He published various works. His Memorie Istoriche dell' Adunanza degli Arcadi, does honour to the author; and to this literary Society, institu ted in 1690, for the restoration of good taste in Italy GIAGINTO GIMMA a celebrated Author • , was of Bari, and died 19- Oct, 1735. His best work was the Idea della Storia dell' Italia Letterata a. vols. Napoli, 17a3. 4. A sketch of his life may be found in Raccolia Calogeriana, Vol. XVII.
