The second of these Collections was compiled by LODOVICO DOLCE, a poet and multifarious writer, who was born at Venice in 1508., and died there in 1568. His necessities made him write with too much haste, and incorrectness.

DIONIGI ATANAGI, the Editor of the third Colle, was a native of Cagli, in the Duchy of Urbino; and went very young to Rome in 1532. After struggling for distinction there for 25 years, he found himself still in poverty and his health broken by uneasiness In 1557 he reestablished himself in his native country; under the patronage of the Duke of Urbino; and Bernardo Tasso committed his poem of

Amadigi to his judgement. In 1560 he removed to Venice, where he employed himself in the correction of Books. He was living in 1567., and was deceased in 1572. He was buried in the church of St.Luke at Venice. He was held in esteem for his genius: and especially for his taste in subjects of eloquence, and of purity of language. He published numerous works.

GIROLAMO RUSCELLI, a native of Viterbo city of the Papal States, was one of the first literati of his time; and was held in esteem by Princes and all ranks of persons He was, as well as Dolce and Atanagi, a voluminous writer. He died at Venice in 1566, where for some years he gave himself up to a correspondence with men of letters. He published Tre Discorsi sopra l'opere di Lodovico Dolce which involved him in a bitter quarrel with that author. Dolce made every endeavour to be reconciled; but Ruscelli was relentless; and refused to make any honourable mention of Dolce in his collection of Poetry; while Dolce on the contrary took more than one opportunity of noticing Ruscelli with praise. On this account Crescimbeni pronounces Ruscelli to have been in the wrong •

AGOSTINO GOBBI " the Editor of the Bologna Gollection of 1709, dates his dedication from Bologna I June 1709, and subscribes himself Alunno del Collegio di Montalto". It seems that the Compiler died before the publication of the third volume in 1711, by the following Preface:

AGOSTINO GOBBI raccoglitore delle Rime contenute

in questi tre volumi, venne à morte prima d'aver data l'ultima mano al terzo, che contiene i rimatori viventi. Ordinò tuttavia, che qual' egli il lasciava tale si pubblicasse, incaricando solamente noi di procurare d'arricchirlo con maggior numero di poesie di que' medesimi autori, che egli nel suo manuscritto aveva scelti, e per ordine disposti. La quale volontà sua è stata per noi diligentemente mandata ad effetto ".

At the end of this third volume is an addition of Rime d'alcuni illustri autori viventi aggtunte alla terza parte della Scelta d'Agostino Cobbi. In Bologna 1711.

Parendo a noi che la scelta di rime degli Autori viventi lasciata dal Gobbi fosse imperfetta, come quella, a cui mancano le poesie di molti chiarissimi e celebratissimi ingegni del nostro secolo: ed essendoci dopo la morte di esso venuto nelle mani buon numero di poesie d'alcuni di loro, parte da noi con molta instanzia ricercate, parte da' medesimi Autori cortesemente offerte, e parte somministrate da diversi nobili e letterati uomini, il giudicio de' quali grandemente da noi è apprezzato; abbiamo preso consiglio di pubblicarne il presente saggio, che può servire di componimento alla scelta del Gobbi : non senza disegno di darne fuori eziandio non giusto volume, ove conosciamo che degli amatori della poesia sia stata ricevuta a grado questa mia fatica.

In this supplement are eleven Sonnets by Gobbi.

These Collections contain specimens of most of the Poets, up to the period at which they were respectively published. But they not only contain those of most of the principal poets: they preserve also those of numerous comparatively obscure authors, whose poems were never published separately.

Of how many of the principal poets they exhibit pieces, may be best seen by the following Chronological Catalogue of the Hundred chief poetical writers, to whom Crescimbeni has given a place.
