EPISTLE. 1 Peter i. 3. 7.-Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy hath regenerated us into a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto an inheritance uncorruptible and undefiled, and that cannot fade, reserved in heaven for you, who by the power of God are kept by faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last tiine. Wherein you shall greatly rejoice, if now you must be for a little time nade sorrowful in divers temptaitions; that the trial of your faith, (much more pre
cious than gold which is tried by the fire) may be found unto praise, and glory, and honour, at the appearing of Jesus Christ our Lord.. 1Alleluia, Alleluia. V. John xv. 5. 11.- At that time : Jesus said to his disciples : I am the vine, you the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth. If you abide in me, and my word abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will, and it shall be done unto you. In this is my Father glorified; that you bring forth very much fruit, and become my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, I also have loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love; as I also have kept my Father's commandments, and do abide in his love. These things have I spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be filled.

LESSON. Wisd. iii. 8.—The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and the torment of death shall not touch them, In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die ; and their departure was taken for misery; and their going away from us, for utter dee struction : but they are in peace. And though in the sight of men they suffered torments, their hope is full of immortality. Afflicted in few things, in many they shall be well rewarded; because God hath tried them, and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace he hath proved them, and as a victim of a holocaust he hath received them, and in time there shall be respect had to them. The just shall shine, and run to and fro, like sparks among the reeds. They shall judge nations, and rule over people, and their Lord shall reign for ever.

GOSPEL. Luke xxi. 9. 19.–At that time : Jesus said to his disciples : When you shall hear of wars and seditions, be not terrified; these things must first come to pass, but the end is not yet presently. Then he said to chein: Nation shall rise against nå. tion, and kingdoin against kiugdom. And there shall be great earthqnakes in divers places, and pestilences, and famines, and terrors fronı hearen, anu. there shall be great signs. But beforr all these things they will lay their hands on yon: and persecutc you, ilelivering you up to the synagoguies and into prie
sons, dragging you before kings and governors for iny name's sake. And it shall happen unto you for a testimony. Lay it up therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before how you shall answer. For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to resist and gain-say. And you shall be betrayed by your parents, and bres thren, and kinsmen, and friends : and some of you they will put to death. And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake: but a hair of your head shall not perish. In your patience you shall possess your souls.
