With all best wishes, Domestic Current Events It is announced that most of the British shell contracts in the United States will run cut within six months and many of them within three months after January 1st, and that they will not be renewed. Great Britain will continue to purchase copper, brass, steel and other raw materials from the United States, but she will not purchase any more of the finished shells. Five members of the Russian Imperial Railway Commission, Count Sergius Shulenberg. Maximilian Groten, A. Pevzoff, Vladimir Levin and Michael M. Bronikovsky, recently inspected the New York subway system. John D. Rockefeller has given $500.000 to the Grace H. Dodge Memorial Fund of the Young Women's Christian Association. An increase in the postage rates on newspapers, magazines and periodicals admitted to the mails as second-class matter will be again attempted in the Post Office appropriation bill soon to be reported to Congress. It is proposed to apply the zonesystem to all matter listed as "second class." Under the plan proposed, it would cost three times as much to mail a publication like The Caledonian to Chicago, and six times as much to San Francisco, as it does at present. It is to be hoped that this unfair increase will be defeated in Congress. The "New York William A. Sunday Association" has been incorporated with many prominent people as directors, and a large tabernacle will be erected on Washington Heights for the campaign of the great evangelist which opens in April, 1917. The city of Boston voted against prohibition in the election of December 19th by a vote of 53,459 to 29,997, a majority of 23,462. According to a statement by the Foreign Trade Department of the National City Bank, New York, December 18th, the gold and silver produced in the last quarter of a century throughout the world equalled the amount of those metals mined in the preceding four hundred years. The production of more than $8,000,000,000 worth of gold in the last quarter of a century, it was pointed out, as against another $8,000,000,000 worth in the preceding four hundred years occurred chiefly within the last decade. Down to 1885 the world's gold output never reached as much as $100,000,000 annually; in 1896 it crossed the $200,000,000 line; in 1903. $300,000,000, and in 1906, for the first time. exceeded $400,000,000. It advanced steadily until it reached $470,000,000 in 1915. |
