"I am very fond of your books, as I find that under a good teacher they highly interest the children and make them good readers. The percentage in reading in the boys' school last year was one hundred, and this year ninety-nine. This fact alone speaks volumes for your reading books."-Extract from a Letter from Mr. G. Coppin, Head Master, St. Michael and All Angels, Woolwich.

EXTRACT FROM AN ADDRESS ON THE NEW CODE BY S. G.

[ocr errors]

TREMENHEERE, H.M.I. (KENDAL DISTRICT).

"The third set, for the higher Standards, may be a book of extracts from Standard Authors; but I myself should prefer a story complete in itself, such as Robinson Crusoe' (sufficient for two years), The Vicar of Wakefield,' Gulliver's Travels' (in expurgated form), Masterman Ready,' Tom Brown's Schooldays,' Andersen or Grimm's Tales,' Arabian Nights,' Don Quixote,' &c., &c., or, better than ali, a Play of Shakespeare. Children who have passed Standard III. ought to be able to read fluently and easily enough any work of ordinary difficulty that is placed in their hands, and the time has then come, I think, when we may with advantage introduce them to some of our best English literature, so that they may no longer look upon reading as a dry task, but find a pleasure in it, and continue it after they leave school because they like it. I am afraid you will never give them this taste by grinding away at fragmentary extracts, and this is why I think so much of a consecutive story or a play of Shakespeare's."

NOTE.-The following version is reprinted from the copy of Shakspere used by the late Charles Kemble in his public readings. By its careful abridgment, by the omission of all objectionable passages, and the occasional accentuation of emphatic words, it is well adapted for school use, with a view to which short notes have also been appended.
