PREFACE

M"

Y object in editing this volume has been to supply

masters and pupils alike with an ample variety of questions for practice. Any one who has had to prepare candidates for competitive examinations, in which Classical or Historical questions of a miscellaneous character form part, can, I think, bear testimony to the difficulty hitherto found, as a rule, in directing such a course of reading as may be advantageous; I trust that this volume, containing as it does questions on almost every conceivable point of scholarship, criticism, or antiquities, will do something to remove that difficulty. The high character of the Examinations, in which the questions were originally proposed, will be sufficient guarantee for their value. I have aimed at making the Notes suggestive; not, by any means, complete. I do not think that I have given too little help; I trust, at the same time, that I have not, as a rule, given too much. It is scarcely necessary to say, that at the various College Scholarship Examinations at Oxford, an English Essay always forms part, and that at Cambridge there are always two or three papers in Mathematics; this is also the case at the Examination for the Bell Scholarships at the same University; a specimen of the Divinity questions always given in that Examination will be found in the volume. The History questions, as given for the last five years in the Classical Tripos, will, it is hoped, be found valuable; as also the volume generally, in suggesting subjects for consideration to students preparing for the paper in Greek and Latin Philology which is, in future years, to form part of the same Examination. There now only remains for me to express my hearty thanks to all friends who have, in any way, contributed to the putting together of the volume, either by the furnishing of Examination Papers, or by contributing to the hints given for their solution, and to say that I shall be thankful for any future contributions of that nature, as also for all corrections or suggestions addressed as below. This Second Edition has been carefully revised throughout : it was not, however, thought desirable to increase the size of the volume by any material additions.
