Expl. These words agree to the Church, the spouse of Jesus Christ, and to all the holy souls in the Church. They may therefore, in a particular manner, he applied to the B. V. Mary, the holiest of all pure creatures. The King is Jesus Christ: the perfumes, the graces and virtues with which he adorned his blessed Mother. t Expl. These figurative expressions mark the intimate union there is between Christ and his holy Mother, and all the souls of the righteous. $ Expl. I am black, that is to say, of myself I am without beauty, but the graces and mer of God have made me beautiful, and gained me his everlasting love, and brought on that happy union between us. # Expl. The bridegroom speaks to his holy Mother, and invites her to eternal rest after the storms and tempests of this life.

ill, $ Expl. 'Tis the eternal Wisdom, begotten of the Father before all ages, and coeternal with him, that speaks here. It was this Wisdom that gave the law to Moses, and appointed every part of the ancient service, figurative of the truths of the new law, and thus by his types, ministered in the sanctuary, the holy abode of God. But this eternal Wisdom became incarnate, and that in the womb of the blessed Mary: in remembrance therefore of this blessing are read on the feasts of the blessed Virgin several passages, which, in their literal and proper sense, appertain to Christ alone, in whom with the Father and Holy Ghost, all our religious worship properly terminates.
