PUBL I C.

CRIPTURE is certainly the best interpreter of Scripture; but it only is fo to thofe, who have time and abilities to compare together the writings of the infpired authors; that they may be able to discover, from the coincidence of the parts, the onenefs of the whole: Befides, this requires a knowledge of the original languages in which the books of Scripture were written, an acquaintance with ancient hiftorical facts, and with the customs and manners of heathen nations alluded to in the Volume of Infpiration.

But, as it will be eafily granted, that this is not the cafe with the generality of Chriftians, fo it will be as readily allowed, that the study of the Scriptures becomes more eafy and advantageous, when we have the writings of divines to affift us in our inquiries. The world abounds with writings of this kind; but thofe, I believe, of greatest ufe to the pious and judicious Christian, are fuch as give a rational, concife, and prefpicuous view of the feveral books which compofe the Canon of the Old and New Teftaments. The writer who has employed his labours to this end, fhould be confidered as having

having done effential fervice to mankind. His writings fhould be generally known and carefully studied.

If a right understanding of the Scriptures is neceffary to our prefent and future happinefs; and, if we fhould accept of every affiftance to attain this end; then, the Editor hopes, that this edition of COLLYER'S SACRED INTERPRETER, will be favourably received by the public. The title of the book thews what were the Author's views in writing it; for, it will be found, upon perufal, a most useful help to promote an agreeable and profitable acquaintance with the word of God. The Sacred Interpreter has the approbation of learned, ingenious, and pious men, and is recommended by them, as proper to be read and digefted by thofe, whofe office it is, to teach the truths and duties of the Chriftian Religion. The private Chriftian will also find it a book fuited to his capacity; and, we may venture to affirm, that next to the Bible, he cannot have a more valuable one in his poffeffion.

That a book of fuch merit as the Sacred Interpreter may be more generally known, was one motive which influenced the Editor in the prefent publication: Besides, there are fo few copies of former editions of the Sacred Intepreter to be met with, that thofe who wish to have the book, could not, but at a very advanced price: So, that if any apology is neceffary, thefe two reafons are a fufficient one.
