An Appeal for an Unendowed Hospital in want of Immediate Help.

[graphic][graphic][merged small][merged small][merged small]

H.R.H. THE DUKE OF SAXE-COBURG-GOTHA, K.G.

Treasurers.

JOHN B. MARTIN, Esq., 68 Lombard Street, E.C. GEORGE J. DRUMMOND, Esq., 49 Charing Cross, S.W.

The debt on December 31st, 1893, amounted to £11,392.

The Council have pleasure in stating that on the occasion of the Triennial Festival Dinner, held on the 19th May last (at which H.R.H. the Duke of Cambridge presided, and H.R.H. the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was present), subscriptions were received which will reduce this debt to some £7,000, and they now confidently appeal to the Public for their assistance to completely extinguish the debt, and enable the Council to carry on the Hospital with undiminished efficiency.

The Hospital is entirely unendowed, and relieves over

23,000 PATIENTS YEARLY,

most of whom come from the DENSELY POPULATED and POOR SECTIONS of the West Central District of the Metropolis. Owing to its CENTRAL POSITION, the Hospital also receives an ABNORMAL number of ACCIDENTS.

Donations and Annual Subscriptions will be thankfully received by the TREASURERS; the Bankers, Messrs. DRUMMOND; Messrs. MARTIN & Co.; Messrs. COUTTS; Messrs. HOARE; Messrs. Sir C. M'GRIGOR, Bart., & Co.; or by ARTHUR E. READE, Secretary.

The ARCHBISHOP of CANTERBURY.'It would be totally impossible for the present work of the Church of England to be carried on with half its efficiency were it not for the help of this Society in our most important places.' . . . (Again, speaking in 1893.) Whenever for some years past I have taken up a paper or circular of the Additional Curates Society I have always found myself confronted with words of my own, and each time as I read them I say to myself, these are very strong expressions. Then when I have looked at any of the papers or reports I always feel that those words were not in the least too strong. This work I am sure is wisely done.'

The ARCHBISHOP of

YORK. —'I heartily commend the claims of this excellent Society, not only on account of the admirable work it is doing in the Diocese and throughout the Church of England, but also because of the principles of thorough loyalty to the Church on which it is conducted, and the entirely impartial spirit in which it distributes its grants.'

The BISHOP of LONDON.-'I appeal most earnestly to all Christians to support the work of the Society. There is, in my judgment, no Society that does more valuable work for the Church.'

(ADDITIONAL CURATES SOCIETY) ARUNDEL HOUSE, VICTORIA EMBANKMENT, LONDON, W.C. (Opposite the Temple Railway Station).

THE ANNUAL MEETING

WILL TAKE PLACE ON

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 1894,

AT 3 p.m., IN ST. MARTIN'S TOWN HALL, CHARING CROSS.

Chairman:

HIS GRACE THE ARCHBISHOP OF YORK.

Speakers:

THE LORD BISHOP OF CHESTER.

THE LORD BISHOP OF NORWICH.

THE REV. E. HOSKYNS, and others.

The Society seeks to provide additional Clergymen to work especially in the poorest and most densely-populated districts.

For the year ending Lady Day, 1894, grants were voted in support of 1,162 ADDITIONAL CLERGY. Most of these grants will remain in force till Michaelmas next.

URGENT NEEDS.

A very serious Deficit in the Income of 1893 is causing the Committee grave anxiety.

The Income for 1892 was

The Income for last year was only

DEFICIT

£87,476

74,720

£12,756

The Expenditure for 1893 was £85,213.

Notices have in consequence been issued that after Michaelmas next more than 170 Grants must be withdrawn, and a large number of others considerably reduced. The Committee are deeply conscious of the anxiety which this withdrawal of aid must cause to many zealous and self-denying Incumbents. They are, however, not without hope that when the Society's need of additional aid is more fully known, Church people will not allow the good work done in the past years to languish for want of support.

SPECIAL GIFTS are invited for announcement at the Meeting. The sums already received amount to £1,430. It is hoped this may be considerably augmented before the Meeting takes place.

Cheques, crossed COUTTS & CO.,' may be sent to the Secretary (Rev. Paul Petit), Arundel House, London, W.C.
