PREFACE.

THIS little Volume is published as a Contribution to the Fund which my Congregation are at present raising, for the purpose of erecting a NEW CHURCH, with a commodious HALL and suitable CLASS-ROOMS, in the EAST-END of Glasgow, where such a Building is much required. But for such a benevolent object this Book, in all likelihood, would never have been published; one thing at least is certain, that, but for the aim connected with its publication, it would not have appeared in its present form.

Whatever Literary estimate may be formed of the following Contributions, I fondly hope that the good cause sought to be promoted by this effort will, to some extent, disarm Criticism, and draw forth an encouraging amount of public patronage and support. It is, perhaps, but right to state, that the two first Poems, "THE-PYRAMIDS," and "THE TRAGEDY OF CABUL," were written during my College Days, now nearly twenty years ago.

The Sketch on "OUR SCOTTISH PEASANT LITERATURE" is but a bird's eye glance of a wide and varied field of Literary effort, closely identified for the most part with the hard and horny hand of rustic Labour; with the humble Cottage homes of our country, and invested with a National interest. The subject, in competent hands, would form a highly interesting Volume.

GLASGOW, December, 1861.
