F we distinguish between the two Testaments, Old and New, there are not the same Sacraments, nor the same Promises; but for the most part the same Commandments. The Sacraments are not the same, for Sacraments which impart salvation are different from Sacraments which promise a Saviour. The Sacraments of the New Testament impart salvation, the Sacraments of the Old Testament promised a Saviour. When, then, you have already the things promised, why seek you the things which promised, seeing you already have the Saviour?

say you have the things promised, not because we have already received life eternal, but because Christ has now come who was foretold by the Prophets.

Because then to every man, when converted unto God, his pursuit is changed, his pleasures are changed; for they are not withdrawn, but are changed: so all our pleasures in this life are not yet in substance, but in hope; still the

HE Himself is the foundation and

corner-stone, rising from the bottom if, indeed, it is from the bottom. For the base of this foundation is the highest summit of the building; and as the foundation of a bodily fabric is at its lowest part, so the foundation of the spiritual structure is at the highest. If we were being built up on the earth, we should have to lay our foundation on the lowest level: but since our edifice is a heavenly one, to heaven our Foundation has gone before us. He then Himself, the corner-stone, and the apostles and mighty prophets, the hills that bear the fabric of the city, constitute a sort of living structure.
