PREFACE. THE main object of the following pages has been to form a Manual of Amusement, Instruction, and Example; to illustrate, however imperfectly, the advantages to be derived from the practice of discipline and duty; and to show that there are CURIOSITIES IN WAR as in LITERATURE. Bright examples must ever act as incentives to noble deeds, and it is hoped that whilst this volume may prove interesting to the general public, the military reader may derive from it practical lessons for the formation of character.
