Fecerit arbitria;

Non, Torquate, genus, non te facundia, non te
Restituet pietas.

Infernis neque enim tenebris Diana pudicum
Liberat Hippolytum;

Nec Lethæa valet Theseus abrumpere caro
Vincula Pirithoo.

Livy.

Tacitus.

Auspicia sortesque, ut qui maxime, observant. Sortium consuetudo simplex. Virgam, frugiferæ arbori decisam, in surculos amputant, eosque, notis quibusdam discretos, super candidam vestem temere ac fortuito spargunt. Mox, si publice consuletur, sacerdos civitatis, sin privatim, ipse paterfamiliæ, precatus deos cœlumque suspiciens, ter singulos tollit, sublatos secundum impressam ante notam interpretatur.

III.-For Translation into Latin Prose:

After the conclusion of the Swiss war, leading men from nearly all the cities of Gaul were deputed to wait upon Cæsar and offer him their congrațu

lations. They said that they were aware that war had been made upon the Swiss for the purpose of inflicting the punishment they had merited by the many acts of injustice of which they had, for so long a time, been guilty towards the Romans, and that they felt the affair had been productive of as much advantage to Gaul as to the Romans themselves; for, in point of fact, the Swiss had, during a state of unexampled prosperity, quitted their own country with the view of attacking the whole of Gaul at once; that their intention was to gain possession of a territory where they might choose for themselves, out of the great number of convenient localities the Gauls possessed, one which should be most advantageous and convenient, and reduce the other states to the condition of tributaries.

IV.-For Translation into Latin Verse:

To fair Fidele's grassy tomb,

Soft maids and village hinds shall bring,
Each opening sweet of earliest bloom,
And rifle all the breathing spring.
No wailing ghost shall dare appear,
To vex with shrieks this quiet grove,
But shepherd lads assemble here,

And melting virgins own their love.
The red-breast oft at evening hour,
Shall kindly lend his little aid,
With hoary moss and gather'd flowers,

To deck the ground where thou art laid.
