Till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance,

In the place, O Lord, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in;

In the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.

The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.

For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.

And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them,

Sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously;

The horse and his rider hath he thrown into the

sea.

GOD MAKES ALL HIS GOODNESS TO PASS BEFORE MOSES

Exodus xxxiii. 12-xxxiv. 8.

[graphic]

ND Moses said unto the Lord, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me: yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight. Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy

sight; and consider that this nation is thy people. And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth. And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: and it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: and I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts; but my face shall not be seen.

And the Lord said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first; and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest. And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount. And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.

And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the

first: and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone. And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.

BALAAM BLESSES ISRAEL
Numbers xxiv. 1-9.

[graphic]

ND when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness. And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him. And he took up his parable, and said,

Balaam the son of Beor hath said,

And the man whose eyes are open hath said:
He hath said, which heard the words of God,
Which saw the vision of the Almighty,
Falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob!

And thy tabernacles, O Israel!

As the valleys are they spread forth,

As gardens by the river's side,

As the trees of lign aloes, which the Lord hath

planted,

And as cedar trees beside the waters.

He shall pour the water out of his buckets,

And his seed shall be in many waters,

And his king shall be higher than Agag,
And his kingdom shall be exalted.
God brought him forth out of Egypt;

He hath as it were the strength of an unicorn:
He shall eat up the nations his enemies,
And shall break their bones,

And pierce them through with his arrows.
He couched, he lay down as a lion,

And as a great lion: who shall stir him up?
Blessed is he that blesseth thee,
And cursed is he that curseth thee.

A SONG OF MOSES

Deuteronomy xxxii. 1-43.

IVE ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak;

And hear, O earth, the words of my
mouth.

My doctrine shall drop as the rain,
My speech shall distil as the dew,

As the small rain upon the tender herb,
And as the showers upon the grass:
Because I will publish the name of the Lord:
Ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
He is the Rock, his work is perfect;
For all his ways are judgment:

[graphic]

A God of truth, and without iniquity,
Just and right is he.

They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children:

They are a perverse and crooked generation.
Do ye thus requite the Lord,

O foolish people and unwise?

Is not he thy father that hath bought thee?

Hath he not made thee, and established thee?

Remember the days of old,

Consider the years of many generations:

Ask thy father, and he will shew thee;

Thy elders, and they will tell thee.

When the Most High divided to the nations their

inheritance,

When he separated the sons of Adam,

He set the bounds of the people

According to the number of the children of Israel:
For the Lord's portion is his people;
Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.
He found him in a desert land,

And in the waste howling wilderness;
He led him about, he instructed him,
He kept him as the apple of his eye.
As an eagle stirreth up her nest,
Fluttereth over her young,
Spreadeth abroad her wings,

Taketh them, beareth them on her wings;
So the Lord alone did lead him,

And there was no strange god with him.

He made him ride on the high places of the earth, That he might eat the increase of the fields;

And he made him to suck honey out of the rock,

And oil out of the flinty rock;

Butter of kine, and milk of sheep,

With fat of lambs,

And rams of the breed of Bashan,
