περί μεν ούν του μεγίστου των ευεργετημάτων και πρώτου γενομένου ταύτ' ειπείν έχομεν. περί δε τους αυτους χρόνους ή πόλις δρώσα τους μεν βαρβάρους την πλείστην της χώρας κατέχοντας, τους δ' "Έλληνας είς μικρόν τόπον κατακεκλημένους, και τους μεν διά λιμόν τους δε διά πόλεμον απολλυμένους, ηγεμόνας εις τας πόλεις εξέπεμψεν, οι παραλαβόντες τους μάλιστα σίτου δεομένους, στρατηγοί γενόμενοι αυτών και πολέμω κρατήσαντες τους βαρβάρους, πολλάς μεν πόλεις έκτισαν, απάσας δε τας νήσους κατώκισαν. και άπασιν έκανήν τήν οίκοι χώραν κατέλιπον ή πλείω της υπαρχούσης έδοσαν.

2. Translate into Greek(i) Socrates seems to have thought that the soul of

man will live for ever. (ii) How would it have been possible for Cyrus to

conquer the army of Artaxerxes, if the Greeks

had not been with him ? (iii) The younger sons of kings are often wiser and

better than their elder brother who is to reign. (iv) He struck him and kept striking him, until

A.-1. Translate into Latin prose

In this order they marched forward till they came to a small stream called Bulissus, the sight of which gave great pleasure to the soldiers, as well on account of their heat and thirst, as of the fatigue of marching through a sandy desert. Most of the officers were of opinion that they ought to pass the night there, and after having procured the best possible tidings as to the number and position of the enemy, to advance against them at break of day. But Crassus, yielding to his impetuous son, and to the eagerness of the cavalry, would not consent to halt.

2. Translate

Erat in Carnutibus summo loco natus Tasgetius, cuius maiores in sua civitate regnum obtinuerant. Huic Caesar pro eius virtute atque in se benevolentia, quod in omnibus bellis singulari eius opera fuerat usus, maiorum locum restituerat.
