Si recta quam

Tu quæfo eandem fac teram :

Erraticus fin divager, rectà meos

Tu quæfo dirigas pedes.

Quicquid negârit vel Tua fapientia,

Vel caritas indulferit;

Hoc ne datum levem excitet fuperbiam,

Illud negatum murmura.

Aliena fac ut ufque defleam mala,

Aliena peccata ut tegam;

Quamque ipfe cæteris adhibuerim, mihi

Redhibeto mifericordiam.

Vilis licet fim, non tamen viliffimus,
Cùm fpiritus me alat Tuus:

Greffus meos, five hora detur longior,

Sive ultima adfit, O regas!

This day be bread and peace my lot;

All elfe beneath the fun

Thou know'st if best bestow'd, or not;

And let thy will be done.

To Thee, whofe temple is all space,

Whofe altar earth, fea, fkies;

One chorus let all beings raise,

All nature's incenfe rife!

TO THE POST-CHARIOT OF A FRIEND,

GOING ABROAD.

O MAY Auriga's lucid star,

Direct thee, Chariot, on thy way;
Whose whirling wheels from England far
To fouthern climes my friend convey:
And may no fhock his ease invade

From fnapping spring, or linch-pin lost ;
No crack, fave those by poft-boys made,
Till Bernard's ice-crown'd cliff be croft.

Steel were his nerves, his finews brass,
Who first with vaulting footstep rose
Sublime; and from the virgin-pass

Look'd down upon eternal fnows:
Who, by the raving ftorm unscared,

'Mid Alpine precipices strode ;

The thundering mafs unflinching heard,

And dauntless traced the defperate road.
In vain, to chariot-wheels denied,

The crags their glittering horrours raise;
