1Philip le Bel had seized Guienne and Gascony at the beginning of the year. Convocation was summoned to Westminster for Sept. 21, (no. 393.)

"He was presented to a prebend in Osmotherley in 1292 (no. 1203); appointed guardian of Fountains abbey, then impoverished, June 1, 1291 (Cal. of Pat. Rolls (1281–1292), p. 431). He was co-executor, with bp. Burnell and Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln, of the will of Eleanor of Castile (Ibid., p. 478).

The archdeacon of Richmond at this time was Gerard de Wyppeyns (Vol. i, p. 344n). In 1289 he held in commendam the churches of Waddington, Lincs., and Greystoke, Cumberland, a canonry and prebend of York, and a canonry of Lichfield with expectation of a prebend (Cal. P.L., i, 507). Gerard de Wypens, presented in minor orders by Henry

de Lacy, earl of Lincoln, was
granted the custody of the church
of Waddington, Feb. 3, 1283-4, and
instituted and admitted at the
Whitsuntide ordination at St.
Leonard's priory, Stamford, when
he was ordained a subdeacon
(Sutton, Lincoln roll, a°v). Le
Neve (iii, 137) gives May 22, 1290,
as the date of his admission to the
archdeaconry of Richmond. On
May 14 in that year he had letters of
protection for one year as Gerard de
Wypeings, clerk, nephew of Otho
de Grandisono, dwelling at Orleans
for study (Cal. of Pat. Rolls (1281-
1292), p. 354). Eudric, Vtdricus,
Odericus, de Wyspayns, rector of
Workington, Cumberland, who oc-
curs frequently in the Patent Rolls
(e. g. Cal. P.R. (1301-7) p. 102), was
probably a brother of Gerard.
