1According to the Yorkshire Assize Roll for 21 Edward i (no. 1087). m. 9, Pickering was also rector of Scorbrough (Scoureburgh). It would appear from a thirteenth century charter in the Dodsworth MSS. (xcv, 66), that paternally William of Pickering was a Bruce. The deed in question is a grant by John, son of William de Craven in Midleton, to Master William de Pikering, son of Adam le Brus of the same, of two bovates of land in the territory of the vill of Midleton juxta Pikering. Witnesses, William Malecake, knt., Thomas de Ebreston, Roger de Wrelton, Bernard de Berch, William son of Thomas, Eustace de Pert, Eudo de Aslakeby. In the same place is a grant by

Maud, widow of Adam le Bruys of
Pykering, daughter and heir of
Symon Ughtreth of Scardeburg, to
Master William de Pykering, arch-
deacon of Nottingham, of all her
lands, etc., in Scardeburgh, Whalles-
grave, now Falsgrave, and Hater-
berg. The donor does not call the
archdeacon her son, though the
pedigree there makes him such.
