"Littera directa domino Karleolensi ad convocandum clerum pro subsidio regi prestando propter confirmacionem Magne Carte libertatum et foreste." Letter from H., archbishop elect, to J. (de Halton), bishop of Carlisle, informing him that the king, on promise of a subsidy, had confirmed the Great Charter and the Forest Charter, and that, owing to the kingdom of England being exposed to great dangers, especially in the northern parts, and that the king stood in great need of money, the laity had granted a ninth. king wished the provinces of York and Canterbury to grant a subsidy in common, but, to avoid trouble, it had been decided that there should be a convocation of either province, so the bishop was ordered to summon a meeting of the clergy of his diocese, to choose two proctors who should go to York on Friday, the eve of St. Andrew (Nov. 29), to treat about this subject.
