ODE XXII.

Innocentiam ubique tutam esse.

INTEGER vitæ, scelerisque purus,
Non
eget

Mauri jaculis neque arcu,
Nec venenatis gravida sagittis,

Fusce, pharetrâ;

Sive per Syrtes iter æstuosas,
Sive facturus per inhospitalem
Caucasum, vel quæ loca fabulosus

Lambit Hydaspes.

Namque me sylvâ lupus in Sabina,
Dum meam canto Lalagen, et ultra
Terminum curis vagor expeditus,

Fugit inermem;

Quale portentum neque

militaris Daunia in latis alit esculetis, Nec Jubæ tellus generat, leonum

Arida nutrix.

Pone me, pigris ubi nulla campis
Arbor æstivâ recreatur aurâ ;
Quod latus mundi nebulæ, malusque

Jupiter urget :

ODE XXII.

TO ARISTIUS FUSCUS.

Fuscus! the man devoid of crime
Needs no defence at any time,
But, pure, may roam in every clime,

From danger free;

Whether his journey lies through lands
Infested by Caucasian bands,
Or over Afric's shifting sands,

Safe shall he be.

For, lately, in the Sabine grove,
Where I was musing of my love,
Rambling, unarm'd, all cares above,

O’er lengthen'd space;

A monstrous wolf, of lion size,
Large as e'er seen by Daunian eyes,
Or Libya's arid waste supplies,

Fled from my face!

Place me in lands devoid of trees,
All unrefresh'd by summer breeze,
Where chilling colds incessant freeze,

I'll sing my fair ;

Pone sub curru nimium propinqui
Solis, in terrâ domibus negatâ,
Dulce ridentem Lalagen amabo,

Dulce loquentem.

Place me within the Torrid Zone,
Where hearths domestic never shone,
Still, smiling Lalage alone

Shall soothe my care. ODE XXV.

Lydiæ jam vetulæ amatoribus carenti insultat.

Parcius junctas quatiunt fenestras
Ictibus crebris juvenes protervi,
Nec tibi somnos adimunt; amatque

Janua limen,

Quæ prius multum faciles movebat Cardines. Audis minus et minus jam : "Me tuo longas pereunte noctes,

Lydia, dormis ?"

Invicem mochos anus arrogantes
Flebis, in solo levis angiportu,
Thracio bacchante magis sub inter-

lunia vento ;

Cùm tibi flagrans amor, et libido
Quæ solet matres furiare equorum,
Sæviet circa jecur ulcerosum,

Non sine questu ;

Læta quòd pubes hederâ virenti
Gaudeat, pullâ magis atque myrto,
Aridas frondes hyemis sodali

Dedicet Hebro.
