THE substance of this Work was delivered as Lectures during last Advent, and, as the subject is peculiar, it may be necessary to advert to the circumstances which appeared to demand its discussion. It not unfrequently happens that points and subjects of admitted importance lie outside the lines of a pastor's ordinary ministrations. It may be that no special circumstance calls for their consideration, that no necessity dictates an allusion to them. They have either been taken on all hands for granted, or assumed to be beyond controversy, or understood to belong rather to a small section than to the mass of an ordinary congregation. And thus years of ministrations may pass by, unmarked by any discussion of them in the course of Sabbath exposition. Of these |
