administration of Presidents Washington and Adams as wanting in firmness, when compared with that of Mr. Jefferson, who resisted the infringement of our rights, by imposing commercial restrictions injurious to ourselves, and an embargo on our ships, wasteful in the extreme and unlimited in duration; or with that of Mr. Madison, who made resistance by entering into a war without preparation, and closed it without attaining a single object for which it was professed to have been undertaken, and particularly without procuring the abandonment of the claims of impressment and blockade to which the author specially refers.
