Non ita nutritus. (a) fuge quo defcendere geftis: 5
Non erit emiffo reditus tibi. Quid mifer egi?
Quid volui? dices; (b) ubi quid te læferit, et fcis
In breve te cogi, cum plenus languet amator.
Quod fi non odio peccantis defipit augur,
Carus eris Romæ, donec te deferet ætas.
Contrectatus ubi manibus fordescere vulgi
Occupet extremis in vicis balba fenectus,
Cum tibi fol tepidus plures admoverit aures;
Me libertino natum patre, et in tenui re
Majores pennas nido extendiffe loqueris ;
Ut quantum generi demas, virtutibus addas :
Me primis Urbis belli placuiffe domique;
Corporis exigui, præcanum, folibus aptum,
Irafci celerem, tamen ut placabilis effem,
Forte meum fi quis te percontabitur ævum;
Me quater undenos fciat impleviffe Decembres,
Collegam Lepidum quo duxit Lollius anno.

(a) Fuge, quo decedere gestis. (c) Unetus mitteris Ilerdam

Q. HORATII

agreeable to a modeft volume: you grieve that you are fhewn but to a few, and extol public places; tho' educated in another manner. Away with you, whither you are fo folicitous of going there will be no returning for you, when you are once fent out. Wretch that I am, what have I done? What did I want? you will fay; when any one gives you illtreatment, and you know that you will be * fqueezed into small compass, as foon as the eager reader is fatiated. But if the Augur be not prejudiced by refentment of your error, you shall be careffed at Rome only till your youth be paffed. When thumb'd by the hands of the vulgar you fhall begin to grow dirty; either you shall in filence feed the groveling bookworms, or you fhall make your escape to + Utica, or fhall be fent bound to Ilerda. Your difregarded adviser fhall then laugh at you: as he, who in a paffion pushed his refractory afs over the precipice. For who would fave an ass against his will? This fate too awaits you, that faultering dotage fhall feize on you to teach boys their rudiments in the fkirts of the city. But when the abating | warmth of the fun fhall attract more ears; you fhall tell them, that I was the son of a freedınan, and extended my wings beyond my neft; fo that as much as you take away from my family, you may add to my merit that I was in favour with the first men in the state, both in war and peace; of a fhort ftature, grey before my time, calculated for fuftaining of heat, prone to paffion, but fo as to be foon appeafed. If any one fhou'd chance to enquire my age; let him know that I had completed four times § eleven Decembers, in the year that Lollius took in Lepidus as his collegue in the confulate.

*Roll'd up clofe, to lie by: at that time of day, all the books were in rolls, the libri quadrati, as we have them now, not coming into use till long af ewards

*This epifle is fuppofed to have been occafioned by a kind reproach from Auguftus, for our author's neglect, or bashfulness, in acknow ledging him in his works; "Know, fays he, I am angry with you. "What are you apprehensive it will injure your reputation with pofte"rity, that you have been one of my friends?" This is defervedly ranked amongst our author's best performances; and proves at once the moft perfect delicacy of taste and manners, a mafculine fuperiority of
