And last of b c the Law and the Prophets. Thus St. Cyril, p. 64. i διὰ νόμο και προφητῶν παιδα[ωγήσας, who traind us up by the Pedagogy of the Law and the Prophets.Vid. Clem. Alex. Pæd. 1. 1. c. 11. p. 155. St. Cyril in Catech. holy Spirit, and makes an ample Supplication, not that a Torch let down from above may confume the Gifts laid in open View, but that Grace lighting on the Sacrifice may by it inflame the Hearts of all. Again, L. 6. p. 234. Οτ ̓ ἂν δὲ τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον καλῇ, καὶ τὴν Prixades are imilian du Φρικωδες στην επιτελῇ θυ dav. When he invocates the holy Spirit, and confummates the tremendous Sacrifice. And Hom. 32. in Comet, appellat. "Olay ἐσήκῃ πρὸ τῆς τραπέζης ὁ Ἱερεὺς τὰς χεῖρας αναλτων εἰς τὸν ἐξανὸν, καλών τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἄξιον τὸ παρ gayırioda, ej ävada. When the Prieft ftands before the Table, ftretching out bis Hands to Hea ven, invocating the boly Spirit to come and give the Contact. Accordingly Greg Nylen. Orat. 37. quæ & magna Catechetica dicitur, exprefly afcribes the Confecration to both, O aflos availas dia YN OLEN NEVEENS - WEDS Torun, rade's sipras ἄλλος ἁγιάζεται διὰ λό τὸ σῶμα τὸ Λόγω μελα ὑπὸ τὸ Λίγω, ὅτι τῦτό ἐσι τὸ σῶμα μυ. The Bread is fanctified by the Word of God and Prayer [alluding to 1 Tim. iv. 5.] being changed into the Body of the Logos, as it auas faid by the Logos, that This is my Body. And Origen in Matth. xv. T. 2. p. 27. Sanctificatur per verbum Dei & per obfecrationem. It is fanc tified by the Word of God and Prayer. And this may perhaps direct us to understand that difficult Paffage in Juft. M. Ap.x. p. 129. The Clementine highest and most - Part of the Liturgies of St. Mark, alfo in all thy Works, for in Righte- -Lit. Mar.-Who madeft Man after thy own Image, and after thy Likeness, and didst graciously give hin the Delights of Paradife. And when he had tranfgreffed, thou of thy Goodnefs didft not defpife nor abandon him, despise but didft again recal him by the Law, and train him up by the Pedagogy of the Prophets, thou didst reform anď renew him by-thy only begotten Son, our Lord, and God, and Saviour Jefus Christ. -Lit. This only begotten Son of God -defcended from Heaven-being born of the holy Virgin by the Holy Ghoft-incarnate. [ ἑαυτὸν ἀντίλυξον παραδός, offering up himfelf a Ranfom. St. Cyril, p. 167. P. 129. which by only adding the Copulative and, which might early have been omitted in tranferibing) will become very plain, thus, ὅπως καὶ παρ' αὐτό εἶχαρισθεῖσαν τροφὴν. So the Food guhich is euchariftifed by Prayer [and] the Word fpoken him. by bit. As to the Prayer plainly fuppofeth it, when of Oblation, St. Cyril The calls the Eucharift immediately after, τὴν πνευ μαλικὴν θυσίαν, τὴν ἀναίμακτον λατρείαν. The piritual Sacrifice, the un Service ; (as Athenag. fays of it, Leg. pro Chrift. p. 49. καί τοι προσφέρειν δεὸν ἀ blondier Yet we ought to offer the ναίμακτον θυσίαν, και την λογικὴν προσώδειν λαλείαν. unbloody Sacrifce, and το prefent the reafonable [i. e. myftical, or fpiritual] Service ;) and fays, ἐπὶ τῆς παρακαλῶμεν τὸν θεόν τον ὃν this propitiatory, Sacrifice we beseech God; and a Little after, Χρισὸν ἐσφαῖν ασμένον ὑπὲς τῶν ἡμετέρων αμαρλημάτων προσφέρομεν ἐξελεόμενοι ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν καὶ θυσίας ἐκείνης τὸ ἱλασμό ἡμῶν τὸν φιλάνθρωπον ; αυ offer Chrift flain for our Sins, propitiating the Lover of Men both for them and our felves.
