PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS.
WHY publish a new book on this subject? The greatness of the theme, and our long practical acquaintance with it, form our only apology. We do not intend to discuss any of the profound and difficult points connected with the history, language, or philosophy of China; or expect to shed any considerable light on the peculiarities and social life of the people. Our aim precludes any anticipations of this kind. We have signified our object in the conjunction of China and the Gospel. We are desirous of bringing the two together. We are aware, to some extent, of the moral and spiritual necessities of the one, and the adaptation and sufficiency of the other to meet its case. This is our single idea. We recognize the bearing of it in the Missionary enterprise; and the unfolding of its difficulties, the rehearsal of its encouragements, the answers to various objections, with the exhibition of what it requires, and of the glorious
