t Exod. 34. 29, 30. When Mofes came down from Mount Sinai (with the two Tables of Teftimony in Mofes Hand,-) that Mofes wift not that the Skin of his Face bone, while he talked with him. And when Aaron and all the Children of Ifrael faw Mofes, the Skin 30 of his Face fhone, and they were a fraid to come nigh him.

(+) By the Letter here, is not meant the New-Teftament which is writ ten with Letters, but the Law of Mofes, in Oppofition to the Gospel. This, fays Mr. Limborch, may be called the Letter, becaufe it contains only the first Rudiments of Religion. It did not teach that perfect Religion, which Jefus Chrift and his Apoftles delivered to the World. Hence, Gal. 3.24. it is ftyled our School Mafter to bring us to Chrift; it being the Office of a Schoolmafter to teach Children the firft Rudiments of things. This Law or Letter is faid to kill, forafmuch as it condemns to Death thofe who tranfgrefs it, without any promife of Pardon; for the Promife of Remiffion of Sins was not of the Law, but of Grace. The Gospel is called the Spirit, as being attended with a fpiritual and quickning Power: whereby Men dead in Sin, are raised to a spiritual Life, and are, as it were, changed into other Men. So that they walk not after the Flesh, but after the Spirit. This Spiritual and quickning Power the Law was not attended with and therefore, Heb. 7. 19. is jaid to make nothing perfect.

Ifrael could not ftedfaftly behold the face of Mofes, for the glory of his countenance, which glory was to be done away; 8. How fhall not the miniftration of the fpirit be rather glorious. 9. For if the miniftration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the miniftration " of righteousness exceed in glory. 10. For even that which was made glorious, had no glory in this refpect, by reafon of the glory that excelleth. 11. For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious. 12. Seeing then that we have fuch hope, we ufe great * plainnefs [Or, boldness] of fpeech. 13. And not as Mofes, which put avail over his face, that the children of Ifrael could not stedfaftly look to the end of that which is abolished. 14. But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the fame vail untaken away, in the reading of the old teftament; which vail is done away in Chrift. 15. But even unto this day, when Mofes is read, the vail is upon their heart. 16. Nevertheless when it fhall turn to the Lord, the vail fhall be taken away. 17. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18. But we all with open face, beholding as in a glafs the glory of the Lord, are changed into the fame image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord [Or, of the Lord the Spirit.]
